He gave alms as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, kept the precepts, practiced patience, exerted effort, remained in meditative concentration, and diligently cultivated wisdom. However, if one does not understand this principle of Dharma, then all those roots of virtue will be exhausted in vain. Son of good family, look at Devadatta, who was endowed with such roots of virtue. Son of good family, Devadatta was endowed with the thirty marks of a great man. Even though he was endowed with such roots of virtue, because he did not understand this principle of Dharma, all those roots of virtue were completely cut off, and he was born in the great hell of Avici. Son of good family, know that just as Devadatta's roots of virtue were cut off because he did not comprehend this principle of Dharma, so too will the roots of virtue of those who do not comprehend the principle of Dharma be cut off. Son of good family, in the past, immeasurable, countless, exceedingly beyond counting, immeasurable, vast, and incalculable eons ago, beyond that, in a time even further beyond, a Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Awakened Buddha, named King Manifest Like Mount Meru, endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed, Tamer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan, appeared in the world. The lifespan of that Tathagata was ninety-nine kotis of nayutas of hundreds of thousands of years. The name of that world realm was Golden Light Radiating, and that Buddha-field was made of gold. The beings also attained Nirvana through these three vehicles: the Hearer Vehicle, the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, and the Bodhisattva Vehicle. The first assembly of Hearers of that Tathagata was eighty kotis of nayutas of hundreds of thousands of bhikshus, all of whom were Arhats, exhausted of defilements, having cast off their burdens, having attained their own benefit, having completely exhausted the bonds of existence, and whose minds were utterly liberated by the correct teachings. The second assembly was an assembly of seventy kotis of nayutas of hundreds of thousands of bhikshus. The third assembly was sixty kotis of nayutas of hundreds of thousands of

It became an assembly. The fourth assembly was composed of five hundred million billion trillion monks, all of whom were Arhats, free from outflows, having abandoned burdens, having attained their own benefit, completely severing existence, utterly exhausted, and whose minds were completely liberated by the correct teachings. The assembly of nuns was twice that number. The assembly of laymen and the assembly of laywomen were also twice that number. The assembly of Bodhisattvas was also twice that number, all of whom were non-returning, endowed with the tolerance of non-arising phenomena, skilled in manifestly accomplishing the conduct of Samadhi, having thoroughly obtained the Dharani of limitless doors, and were an assembly that turned the wheel of non-returning Dharma. What need is there to mention the assembly of newly entered Bodhisattvas in the vehicle? There were also countless Pratyekabuddhas there. Son of lineage, thus at that time, the assembly of that Bhagavan's retinue gathered immeasurably. In that world realm of golden color radiating light, all the trees or shrubs, whatever there were, were all made of precious substances. From those trees also arose sounds such as the sound of emptiness, the sound of signlessness, the sound of wishlessness, the sound of non-arising, the sound of non-cessation, the sound of non-entity, the sound of non-characteristic, and such sounds. Because of the arising of those sounds, the minds of those beings were liberated. After that Tathagata completely passed into Nirvana, the sacred Dharma remained for a thousand years. Thereafter, those sounds also ceased to arise from those trees. Son of lineage, that Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, the king who was manifestly exalted like Mount Meru, also appointed a monk named Dharma Speaker, whose conduct was pure, to completely uphold the sacred Dharma, and then completely passed into Nirvana. At that time, there also arose a monk named Conduct Intelligence, who possessed a perfectly pure aggregate of morality and worldly Abhidharma.

And he attained the five kinds of clairvoyance, and he became very proficient in the Vinaya Pitaka as well. That bhikshu possessed the highest asceticism and delighted in solitude, practicing within the sangha. He built a monastery and resided there, and he also established his retinue in the very pure aggregate of discipline, delighting in the vows of cultivated qualities. That bhikshu exerted effort and constantly abided in the mind of enlightenment. He also urged other bodhisattvas to diligently practice the same conduct and to diligently practice the view with characteristics. He caused beings to hold that all conditioned phenomena are impermanent. He caused beings to hold that all conditioned phenomena are suffering. He caused beings to hold that all conditioned phenomena are without self. That bhikshu became skilled in samadhi, but he was not skilled in the conduct of a bodhisattva, and he possessed roots of virtue. That Dharma-speaking bhikshu, whose conduct was completely pure, was skilled in knowing the superior and inferior faculties of beings. As many as were in his retinue also diligently took up the vows of cultivated qualities, becoming those who possessed non-apprehension tolerance and were skilled in means. Son of good family, thereafter, that Dharma-speaking bhikshu, whose conduct was completely pure, together with his retinue, went to the monastery where Bhikshu Conduct Wisdom resided, and he stayed there. From that monastery, again and again, out of compassion for sentient beings, he would go to the city, and after doing the work of food there, he would return. There, he caused hundreds and thousands of lineages to have faith. As many as were in his retinue were also skilled in discipline. They also went to those places and taught the Dharma to sentient beings. They also established many hundreds and thousands of living beings in unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Those of the retinue of Bhikshu Conduct Wisdom were devoted to meditation, and they did not go to the cities again. Then, Bhikshu Conduct Wisdom generated a mind of disbelief towards the other bodhisattvas, and so he struck the ghanta.
