will also be combined with the Dharma. End of the third volume. Then, the son of the gods, Lotus Playing with Manifest Knowledge, asked the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, in the future, when Bodhisattvas hear such a Dharma, in order to be fearless and not alarmed, not terrified, and in order to understand all sounds, without hindrance, without doubt, please teach the wisdom of entering into sounds and words. After asking this, the Blessed One said to the son of the gods, Lotus Playing with Manifest Knowledge: Son of the gods, what is the use of you asking about this matter? Well, that wisdom of entering into sounds and languages is not something that a Bodhisattva who is a beginner can know, understand, think about, measure, or easily study. That is not to be spoken in front of a Bodhisattva who is a beginner. Son of the gods, a Bodhisattva Mahasattva who understands sounds and languages, even if in as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges River, he speaks unpleasant words with untrue speech, and is reviled, he will not generate a mind of anger. Even if in as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges River, he is served, respected, honored, and offered with comfortable utensils, clothes, food, bedding, medicine for illnesses, and all utensils, he will not generate a mind of attachment. Son of the gods, for example, an Arhat, one who has exhausted defilements, will not be attached to all the dharmas that should be attached to; nor will he be angry at all the dharmas that should be angry at. Son of the gods, similarly, a Bodhisattva who understands sounds and languages, even if he is served with all comfortable utensils for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges River, he will not generate a mind of attachment. Even if he speaks unpleasant words with untrue speech for as many kalpas as there are sands in the Ganges River, and is reviled, he will not generate a mind of anger. Son of the gods, thus, a Bodhisattva who understands sounds and languages, regarding gain and no gain, and fame

And those who are unnamed, praise and slander, pleasure and pain, cannot be moved or taken away by all of these. They overcome all worldly things and remain immovable like the king of mountains. After speaking thus, the Blessed One said to the son of the gods, Lotus Playful Manifestation of Knowledge, "Blessed One, even in times when it has not yet arisen, Bodhisattvas who have cultivated awareness, those whose awareness is purified, however many may arise, when they hear this knowledge of entering into sound and speech, they will also realize their own faults and will also show them to others. Blessed One, please explain the knowledge of entering into sound and speech." After speaking thus, the Blessed One said to the son of the gods, Lotus Playful Manifestation of Knowledge, "Son of the gods, therefore, listen very well and keep it in mind, and I will explain this meaning to you." "Blessed One, I will do so." The son of the gods, Lotus Playful Manifestation of Knowledge, listened as the Blessed One had spoken. The Blessed One said to him, "Son of the gods, if a Bodhisattva develops a perception of fault in the sound of desire and a perception of attachment in the sound of being free from desire, then he will not study the teachings of the Buddha. If he develops a perception of fault in the sound of hatred and a perception of goodness in the sound of being free from hatred, then he will not study the teachings of the Buddha. If he develops a perception of fault in the sound of delusion and a perception of goodness in the sound of being free from delusion, then he will not study the teachings of the Buddha. If he is attached to the sound of having few desires and angry at the sound of having many desires, then he will not study the knowledge of entering into sound and speech. If he is attached to the sound of contentment and angry at the sound of discontent, then he will not study the knowledge of entering into sound and speech. If he is attached to the sound of discipline and angry at the sound of indiscipline, then he will not study the knowledge of entering into sound and speech. If he is attached to the sound of delighting in solitude and angry at the sound of many ordinary people, then he will not study the knowledge of entering into sound and speech.
