Discipline. Gathering together the ten powers, the absence of fear, the absence of mixture, and the wisdom of all-knowingness, is the discipline of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva in conventional terms. Like fleeing from a burning fire, it is the discipline of the Hearer. Rejoicing in the joy of Dharma like a park and a palace, it is the discipline of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva in conventional terms. The unbroken continuity of habitual tendencies is the discipline of the Hearer. Completely and correctly destroying all habitual tendencies is the discipline of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva in conventional terms. In short, a son of the gods, belonging to the measurable, led by the Dharma of the measurable, is the discipline of the Hearer. Not belonging to the measurable, led by the immeasurable Dharma, is the discipline of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva in conventional terms. Obtaining the precepts of the measurable, and hearing, and samadhi, and wisdom, and liberation, and the vision of the wisdom of liberation, is the discipline of the Hearer. Not having the measurable, possessing immeasurable qualities, obtaining immeasurable precepts, and hearing, and samadhi, and wisdom, and liberation, and the vision of the wisdom of liberation, is the liberation of the Bodhisattva Mahasattva in conventional terms. Then, the Bhagavan gave the word "Good!" to Manjushri, who had become a youth. Manjushri, you have well explained the discipline of the Bodhisattva Mahasattvas in conventional terms, good, good! Manjushri, also, in order to show that meaning, I will show you an example. Manjushri, it is like this: Suppose there are two people, and one of them speaks of the praise of the footprints of a cow, and one speaks of the praise of the great ocean. Manjushri, what do you think? How much praise of the footprints of a cow could that person speak? Manjushri replied: Bhagavan, the footprints of a cow, are all small, what need is there to speak of its praise? The Bhagavan said: Manjushri, just as the footprints of a cow are small, so should the discipline of the Hearer be regarded. Manjushri, what do you think? The other person

How much praise of the great ocean can one utter? Manjushri reported: World Honored One, the praise of the great ocean is extremely vast, immeasurable, and inconceivable. The World Honored One instructed: Manjushri, just as the praise of the great ocean is immeasurable, in the conventional truth, one should observe the discipline of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva. Then, when this teaching was explained in a way that it was not being taught, two hundred million sons of gods generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment in the ultimate truth of non-arising, and also spoke these words, saying: World Honored One, we will learn this training of the Bodhisattva in a way that we are not learning. Then, the son of the gods, the perfectly peaceful, completely tamed, and powerful one, said this to Manjushri, who had become a youth: Manjushri, have you trained in the discipline of the Hearers? Or have you trained in the discipline of the Bodhisattvas? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, what do you think? Is there any water that cannot be contained in the great ocean? The son of the gods said: Manjushri, there is no water that cannot be contained in the great ocean. Manjushri said: Son of the gods, likewise, in the conventional truth, the discipline of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattva is like the great ocean. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, what is the meaning of the word 'discipline, discipline'? Manjushri said: Son of the gods, subduing afflictions is, in the conventional truth, discipline. Completely knowing afflictions is also discipline. The son of the gods said: Manjushri, how does one subdue afflictions? How does one completely know afflictions? Manjushri said: In the ultimate truth, if all dharmas are unborn, unarisen, and without substance, then in the conventional truth, one becomes inverted towards non-existence. From becoming inverted towards non-existence, conceptualization and discrimination arise. From conceptualization and discrimination, improper attention arises. From improper attention, attachment to self arises. From attachment to self, all views fully arise. From the full arising of views, afflictions arise. Son of the gods, whatever ultimate
