And liberation has not arisen either. Similar to the equality of the uninterrupted, your liberation is also the same. You are neither liberated nor bound. You have neither seen the Four Noble Truths, nor have you not seen the truth. You are neither an achiever of the fruit, nor an ordinary being, nor have you turned away from the Dharma of ordinary beings. You are neither a noble one, nor a non-noble one. You are both endowed with all Dharmas and separated from the concept of all Dharmas. You have not seen the teacher either. You have not heard the Dharma either. You have not paid homage to the Sangha either, and who are those six teachers? Namely: Purana Kassapa, Makkhali Gosala, Ajita Kesakambali, Pakudha Kaccayana, Nigantha Nataputta, those are the teachers of the monks. Relying on them, you have become ordained. The venerable Subhuti also goes to where those six teachers go, and you are immersed in all views, and you cannot find the edge and the center either. You enter into the eight states of unfreedom, and you do not obtain leisure either. You have become equal to all afflictions, and you do not contain purification either. Whatever is the absence of afflictions for all sentient beings, that is also the absence of afflictions for the monks. Your giving is also not purified. Monks, those who give alms to you, those people also fall into error. You are together with all the maras. All afflictions have also become your friends. Whatever is the nature of afflictions, that is also the nature of monks. You also harbor the thought of killing all sentient beings. You also slander all Buddhas. You also dislike all the Buddhadharma. You also do not trust the Sangha, and you will never pass into complete nirvana, initially you say: 'Come, come and take this food.' Having heard this teaching, I thought, how should I speak to the Bhagavan, how should I say, how should I do? The ten directions became dark, and I even threw away the alms bowl, if I were to leave home again, then someone renowned as immaculate among the Licchavis would say this to me:

Thus he reported. "Venerable Subhuti, do not fear the letters, take this alms bowl! Venerable Subhuti, what do you think? If one were to say that to an emanation of the Tathagata, would he be afraid?" I said to him, "Son of good family, it is not like that." He said to me, "Venerable Subhuti, do not be afraid of all the dharmas of the nature of illusion and emanation. Why is that? Because all those words are its nature. Therefore, the wise do not cling to letters, nor do they fear them. Why is that? Because all those letters are without letters, except for liberation. All dharmas are the nature of liberation." When this teaching was being proclaimed, two hundred sons of the gods generated the pure Dharma eye, without dust and without stain, towards the dharmas. Five hundred sons of the gods attained the tolerance of conformity. I also, having no courage, was unable to answer him again, so, Blessed One, for that reason, I am unwilling to visit that superior man. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Maitreya's son, Gangpo, "Gangpo, go and visit the Licchavi named Vimala." Gangpo also reported, "Blessed One, I am unwilling to visit that superior man." Why is that? Blessed One, I remember once, when I was teaching the Dharma to novice monks in a certain place in the great forest, the Licchavi named Vimala came there and said to me, "Venerable Gangpo, please enter into meditative absorption, observe the minds of these monks, and then teach the Dharma. Do not pour rotten food into a large vessel of jewels. Please understand the thoughts of these monks, and do not compare precious lapis lazuli jewels with mustard seeds. Venerable Gangpo, do not cultivate minor faculties without examining the faculties of beings. Do not create wounds where there are no wounds. Do not lead one who wants to enter the great road into a narrow alley. Do not pour the great ocean into a cow's hoofprint. Do not put Mount Meru into a mustard seed.

Do not enter into the cave! Do not let the firefly block the sunlight! Those who wish to roar the lion's roar, do not fall into the sound of 'wa'! Venerable ones, all these monks have truly entered the Great Vehicle and have abandoned the mind of enlightenment. Venerable ones, do not teach these people the Hearer Vehicle, for the Hearer Vehicle is not true. Regarding understanding the order of beings' faculties, I think these Hearers are like blind people. Then, when the Licchavi known as Vimalakīrti was residing in the well-known Licchavi garden, those monks entered into a samadhi that allowed them to remember many past lives. For the sake of their attaining perfect and complete enlightenment, they possessed the root of virtue from having served five hundred Buddhas in the past. Their mind of enlightenment also manifested, and they bowed their heads at the feet of that noble being, joining their palms in reverence. That being also taught them the Dharma that would prevent them from turning back from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Bhagavan, I thought to myself: Hearers do not teach the Dharma to anyone without examining the minds and thoughts of others. Why is that? Because Hearers are not skilled in distinguishing the superior and inferior faculties of all beings, nor are they constantly in a state of equanimity like the Tathagata, Arhat, perfectly and completely enlightened Buddha. Bhagavan, therefore I am unwilling to visit that noble being. Then, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Mahākāśyapa's son: Kāśyapa's son, go and inquire about the illness of the well-known Licchavi Vimalakīrti! Kāśyapa's son also replied: Bhagavan, I am unwilling to visit that noble being. Why is that? Bhagavan, I have personally witnessed that on one occasion, the Bhagavan gave a concise teaching to the monks. In order to ascertain the meaning of that sutra, I said this: regarding the meaning of impermanence, regarding the meaning of suffering, regarding the meaning of no-self, regarding the meaning of peace.
