When teaching the Dharma, at the place of the Licchavi named Vimala (Spotless), he said to me: 'Venerable son of Katyayana, do not teach the Dharma that has the nature of having causes, having birth, and having destruction. Venerable son of Katyayana, whatever is completely unborn, uncreated, will not arise, unceasing, will not cease, will not be extinguished, that is the meaning of impermanence. Whatever realizes emptiness in the five aggregates, realizes the meaning of non-birth, that is the meaning of suffering. Whatever is the non-existence of both self and non-self, that is the meaning of selflessness. Whatever is without self-nature and without other-nature, that is unburning. Whatever is unburning, that is non-peaceful. Whatever is completely non-peaceful, that is the meaning of peace.' When this teaching was proclaimed, those monks, without attachment, their minds were completely liberated from the defilements. Blessed One, therefore, I am not pleased to go and inquire of that excellent person. Then the Blessed One said to the venerable Non-ceasing: 'Non-ceasing, you go to the Licchavi named Vimala to inquire about his illness.' Non-ceasing also replied: 'Blessed One, I am not pleased to go and inquire of that excellent person.' What is the reason for that? Blessed One, I remember that once, when I was walking in a certain place, the Great Brahma named Subhavyūha (Well-arranged), together with ten thousand Brahmas, illuminated that direction and came to where I was. He bowed to my feet with his head and sat down on one side, saying to me: 'Venerable Non-ceasing, you are said by the Blessed One to be the foremost of those with divine eyes. How far can the divine eye of the venerable Non-ceasing see?' I then said to them: 'Friends, I can see the Buddha-field of the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha, the three thousand great thousand world systems, just as a person with eyes sees a myrobalan fruit placed in the palm of his hand.' When I had said these words, the Licchavi named Vimala came to where I was, bowed to my feet with his head, and then said to me: 'Venerable Non-

Is it the nature of manifesting the destructive (divine eye)? Or is it the nature of not manifesting the destructive? If it is the nature of manifesting the destructive, then it is the same as the five superknowledges of the outsiders. If it is the nature of not manifesting the destructive, then not manifesting the destructive is unconditioned. Since it cannot be seen, how can the venerable one see it? After saying this, I had nothing to say. That Brahma, having heard this teaching from that noble man, was amazed and prostrated, saying: Who in the world has the divine eye? He replied: The Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, are those in the world who have the divine eye. They do not abandon the state of equipoise, and they see all the Buddha-fields, and they are not divided by duality. Then, Brahma and his retinue, thousands of them, having heard this teaching, with superior intention, generated the unsurpassed, perfect, complete, and perfect Bodhicitta. He prostrated to me and that noble man, and after speaking respectfully, he disappeared. I also felt embarrassed. Therefore, I am unwilling to inquire after that noble man. Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and inquire about the illness of the Licchavi Vimalakirti. Ananda also replied: Blessed One, I am unwilling to inquire after that noble man. What is the reason for this? Blessed One, I know that once two monks committed an offense, and because they were ashamed of the Blessed One, they did not go to the Blessed One. Those two came to me and said to me: Venerable Ananda, we two have committed an offense, and because we are ashamed, we have not gone to the Blessed One. Venerable Ananda, please dispel the doubts of us two and save us two from falling. Blessed One, while I was expounding the Dharma to those two monks, the Licchavi Vimalakirti also came, and he said to me: Venerable Ananda, you are for these two monks
