So it was said. Venerable Ananda, do not say such things. Venerable Ananda, the body of the Tathagata is as hard as a diamond. Having abandoned all the imprints of non-virtue and being endowed with all virtuous qualities, how could illness arise in him? How could there be suffering? Venerable Ananda, do not slander the Bhagavan. Say nothing and return. Do not speak such words to anyone else. The glorious, greatly glorious sons of the gods, and the Bodhisattvas who have come from all the Buddha-fields will hear. Venerable Ananda, even a wheel-turning king who possesses small roots of virtue is without illness. How could the Bhagavan, who possesses immeasurable roots of virtue, have illness? That is impossible. Venerable Ananda, do not cause me shame. Return. Other heretical practitioners, wanderers, naked ones, and those who live by sustenance will hear. They will think, 'Alas, if the teacher of these people cannot save himself from illness, how can he save sick beings?' Venerable Ananda, depart hidden and unseen. Let no one hear. Venerable Ananda, the Tathagatas are the Dharma body, not a body nourished by food. The Tathagatas are transcendent bodies, completely beyond all worldly phenomena. The body of the Tathagata is without harm, completely free from all defilements. The body of the Tathagata is unconditioned, separate from all conditioning. Venerable Ananda, to think that such a being could have illness is unreasonable and inappropriate. Having said this, I thought, 'Have I not heard or understood wrongly from the Bhagavan?' I became very ashamed. Then I heard a voice from the sky saying, 'Ananda, just as the householder showed, so it is. However, the Bhagavan appeared in the time of the five degenerations, and therefore he tames beings with humble and impoverished conduct. Therefore, Ananda, do not be ashamed, take the milk and return.' So it was said. Bhagavan,

The teaching on asking and answering about the illness of Licchavi Vimala-kirti is as follows: "Bhagavan, therefore, I am not pleased to inquire about the well-being of that noble man." Similarly, about five hundred shravakas who were displeased also expressed their thoughts to the Bhagavan: "All those who have spoken with Licchavi Vimala-kirti have also reported to the Bhagavan." Then, the Bhagavan said to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: "Maitreya, go and inquire about the illness of Licchavi Vimala-kirti." Maitreya also replied: "Bhagavan, I am not pleased to inquire about the well-being of that noble man. Why is that? Bhagavan, I once personally witnessed that in Tushita and other places, together with the sons of the Tushita lineage, when discussing the Dharma for the sake of the Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas' irreversible state, Licchavi Vimala-kirti was also in that direction. He said to me: 'Maitreya, you have been prophesied by the Bhagavan to be a one-birth bodhisattva who will attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Maitreya, by which birth was that prophesied? Maitreya, was it prophesied by the past birth? Or by the future birth? Or by the present birth? Among them, the past birth has ceased, the future birth has not yet come, and the present birth has no abiding. For example, the Bhagavan has said: 'Monks, you are born, age, die, transmigrate, and arise in a single moment.' For the unborn, one enters into the state of certainty. The unborn is neither prophesied nor does it manifest enlightenment. Maitreya, are you prophesied by such birth, or by such cessation? The nature of suchness is neither born nor ceases, it will not be born nor will it cease. The nature of suchness of all sentient beings, the nature of suchness of all dharmas, and the nature of suchness of all noble ones is also your nature of suchness, Maitreya. If you are prophesied in that way, then all sentient beings are also'

That is the teaching. Why is that? Because Suchness is not distinguished by duality, because it is not distinguished by difference. Maitreya, when you awaken to complete perfect enlightenment, at that time all sentient beings will also awaken to such complete perfect enlightenment. Why is that? Because following the realization of all sentient beings is enlightenment. Maitreya, when you completely pass into nirvana, at that time all sentient beings will also completely pass into nirvana. Why is that? Because the Tathagata will not completely pass into nirvana until all sentient beings have completely passed into nirvana, because they see that all sentient beings have completely passed into nirvana and are of the nature of nirvana. Maitreya, therefore, do not delude or deceive these sons of the gods! No one dwells or regresses in enlightenment. Maitreya, let these sons of the gods abandon the perception of constantly conceptualizing enlightenment! Enlightenment is not the complete perfect awakening by the body, nor is it by the mind. Enlightenment is the complete pacification of all characteristics. Enlightenment is without fabrication by all objects. Enlightenment is without the movement of all mental activities. Enlightenment is the complete cutting off of all views. Enlightenment is free from all conceptualizations. Enlightenment is free from all agitation, thought, and action. Enlightenment does not enter into all aspirations. Enlightenment is free from all grasping and enters without attachment. Enlightenment abides by the position of the realm of Dharma. Enlightenment is the subsequent realization of Suchness. Enlightenment abides at the limit of reality. Enlightenment is without mind and Dharma, therefore it is non-dual. Enlightenment is equal because it is equal to space. Enlightenment is unconditioned because it is without birth, destruction, abiding, and change. Enlightenment is the complete knowledge of all sentient beings' minds, behaviors, and thoughts. Enlightenment is not the gate of the aggregates. Enlightenment is unmixed because it is free from the afflictions that connect all habitual tendencies.
