Do not cling to that transgression again, do not make it confusing, eliminate the regret of these two transgressions. Venerable Ananda, transgression does not exist within, nor does it move outside, nor is it perceived in the absence of both. Why is that? The Blessed One has said: "When the mind is completely defiled, beings are completely defiled; when the mind is completely purified, it becomes completely pure." Therefore, Venerable Ananda, the mind is not within, nor is it outside, nor is it perceived in the absence of both. Just as the mind is with transgression, so it is with all things. Just as transgression is, so it is with all dharmas, it does not go beyond suchness. Venerable Ananda, what is the nature of the mind? By what nature of the mind is the mind of the Venerable one completely liberated? Has that nature of the mind ever been completely defiled? It was said: "It is not." It was said: "Venerable Ananda, the mind of all beings is of that nature. Venerable Ananda, conceptualization is defilement, non-conceptualization is nature. Inversion is defilement, non-inversion is nature. Attachment to self is defilement, selflessness is nature. Venerable Ananda, all dharmas are born and perish and do not abide, like illusions, clouds, and lightning. All dharmas are impermanent, not even staying for a moment. All dharmas are like dreams and mirages, seeing what is not real. All dharmas are like the moon in water and reflections, arising from the mind's conceptualization. Those who know it in that way are called holders of the Vinaya, and those who are tamed in that way are well-tamed." Then, those two monks said this: "This householder is very wise, and the Venerable Ananda, who the Blessed One said is the best of the holders of the Vinaya, is far more than that." I said to them both: "Monks, do not have the thought that he is a householder. Why is that? Except for the Tathagata, who can...

Neither a Shravaka nor a Bodhisattva who can cut off the stream of pride exists; this (referring to Vimalakirti)'s light of wisdom is the same as that (referring to the Shravaka or Bodhisattva). Then the two monks dispelled their doubts and generated the mind of unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment with even more steadfast intention. The two of them prostrated to that noble being and said: May all sentient beings also attain such courage! Thus they prayed. Therefore, I am unwilling to visit that noble being and inquire. Then, the Blessed One instructed the venerable Rahula: "Rahula, go to Vaishali, go to visit the illness of that Vimalakirti who is famous for being immaculate." Rahula also reported: "Blessed One, I am unwilling to visit that noble being and inquire. What is the reason for this? Blessed One, I remember that once, many young men of Vaishali came to where I was and said to me: 'Venerable Rahula, you are the son of the Blessed One, having abandoned the kingdom of a Chakravartin and renounced, what is your aim in renouncing, and what are the merits and benefits of renunciation?' I showed them the merits and benefits of renunciation according to the circumstances. At that time, Vimalakirti, who was famous for being immaculate, was also in the place where I was, he prostrated to me and said: 'Venerable Rahula, the merits and benefits of renunciation that you have shown are not like that.' Why? Because renunciation has no merit or benefit. Venerable Rahula, whatever is related to conditioned phenomena has merit and benefit, but renunciation is associated with the unconditioned; the unconditioned has no merit and benefit. Venerable Rahula, renunciation is not formed, but is separated from form. It is separated from the edges of beginning and end. It is the path of Nirvana. It is praised by the wise. It is accepted by the noble ones. It is what defeats all demons. It is liberation from the five destinies. It is what purifies the five eyes. It is what obtains the five powers. It is the support of the five senses. It does not harm others.

It is pure. It is unmixed with sinful dharmas. It is one who thoroughly subdues other heretics. It is one who has truly transcended imputation. It is deep in the mire of desire. It is without complete grasping. It is without "mine" and separated from self-grasping. It is without taking. It is without strife. It is one who has abandoned strife. It is one who tames his own mind and protects the minds of others. It is in harmony with tranquility. It is without fault in all respects. This is called renunciation. Those who have renounced in this way are well renounced. Young man, you should also renounce in such a well-spoken dharma. The appearance of a Buddha is also difficult to find. Leisure and fortune are also difficult to find. Becoming a human being is also difficult to find. Those young men said this: Householder, we have heard that the Thus-Gone One does not give ordination without the permission of parents. He said to them: Young men, you should generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment and diligently practice. That itself is your renunciation and full ordination. Then, three thousand two hundred Licchavi youths generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect and complete enlightenment. Bhagavan, therefore I am unwilling to go and inquire about that noble man. Then the Bhagavan said to the venerable Ananda: Ananda, go and inquire about the illness of the Licchavi Vimalakirti. Ananda also replied: Bhagavan, I am unwilling to go and inquire about that noble man. What is the reason for this? Bhagavan, I remember that once, when the Bhagavan's body was unwell and needed milk, I was holding a bowl and going to the door of a Brahmin who was like a great Sala tree, and the Licchavi Vimalakirti came in that direction, prostrated to me and said this: Venerable Ananda, why are you standing at the door of this house in the morning with a bowl? I said to him: The Bhagavan's body is unwell and needs milk, so I am looking for it. He said to me
