This body is momentary, perishable, and impermanent, like lightning. This body arises from various causes and conditions, without a master. This body is like earth, without action. This body is like water, without ownership. This body is like fire, without life. This body is like wind, without a person. This body is like space, without inherent existence. This body is the abode of the great elements, and is not real. This body is without self and without what belongs to self, and is empty. This body is like grass, trees, walls, puppets, and cataracts, and is inanimate. This body arises from the turning of the wheel of wind, and is without feeling. This body is an accumulation of pus and impurities, accumulated. This body is always subject to rubbing, kneading, destruction, and change, and is hollow. This body is tormented by four hundred and four diseases. This body is always oppressed by old age, like an old well. This body ends in death, and is ultimately impermanent. This body is completely seized by the aggregates, elements, and sense bases, like an executioner, a venomous snake, and an empty city. You should generate disgust and weariness with such a body, and generate faith in the body of the Tathagata. Friends, the body of the Tathagata is the Dharma body, born from wisdom. The body of the Tathagata is born from merit, born from generosity, born from ethics, born from samadhi, born from wisdom, born from liberation, born from the vision of the wisdom of liberation, born from loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, born from generosity, taming, and right practice, born from the path of the ten virtuous actions, born from patience and endurance, born from the roots of virtue of steadfast diligence, born from meditation, liberation, samadhi, and absorption, born from listening, wisdom, and skillful means, born from the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, born from shamatha and vipashyana.

Born from knowledge, born from the ten powers, born from the four fearlessnesses, born from the eighteen unshared qualities of a Buddha, born from all the perfections, born from clairvoyance and wisdom, born from abandoning all non-virtuous qualities, born from perfectly gathering all virtuous qualities. Born from solitude, born from reality itself, born from mindfulness. Friends, the body of the Thus-Gone One is born from immeasurable virtuous actions. You should generate faith in such a body. In order to completely eliminate the sickness of affliction of all sentient beings, you should generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Likewise, the Licchavi Vimalakirti, in that way, to those assemblies of those who came to inquire about his health, taught the Dharma in such a way that many hundreds of thousands of sentient beings generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. This is called the second chapter, "Inconceivable Skillful Means." Then, the Licchavi Vimalakirti thought to himself: "I am sick and uncomfortable, sitting on a bed. The Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the Perfectly and Fully Awakened Buddha, has not thought of me. Because he is not compassionate, he has not sent anyone to inquire about my health." Then, the Blessed One, knowing the thoughts of the Licchavi Vimalakirti, said to the venerable Shariputra: "Shariputra, go and inquire about the health of the Licchavi Vimalakirti." After he said this, the venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, I am not pleased to go and inquire about the health of the Licchavi Vimalakirti." Why is that? "Blessed One, I remember that once, when I was meditating under a tree, the Licchavi Vimalakirti also came to that tree and said to me: 'Venerable Shariputra, how do you meditate? Like the way you meditate, you should not meditate. How can one's body and mind not appear in the three realms?'"

Thus, abide well within. How it does not diminish even when obstructing, and also appears in all conduct, thus, abide well within. How it does not abandon the nature of what is obtained, and also appears in the nature of each individual, thus, abide well within. How your mind does not stay within, and also does not flow into external forms, thus, abide well within. How it does not waver in all that is seen, and also appears in the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, thus, abide well within. How it does not abandon the afflictions that are practiced in samsara, and also truly enters into peaceful nirvana, thus, abide well within. Venerable Shariputra, those who thus abide well within, abide well within, the Blessed One has taught them to abide well within. After thus reporting, the Blessed One, after I heard this Dharma nature, I cannot reply to it again, and I will not make any report. For this reason, I am not happy to inquire about the well-being of that excellent person and make a report. Then, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Great Maudgalyayana: Maudgalyayana, go and ask about the illness of the famous Vimalakirti. Maudgalyayana also reported: Blessed One, I am not happy to inquire about the well-being of that excellent person and make a report. Why is that? Blessed One, I remember one time, at the gate of a street in the vast city, I was teaching the Dharma to the householders, when Vimalakirti came to me and said: Venerable Maudgalyayana, you should not teach the Dharma to the white-clothed householders in this way. Venerable Maudgalyayana, the Dharma should be taught as it is, Venerable Maudgalyayana, the Dharma is without sentient beings, that is, free from the defilement of sentient beings; without self, that is, free from the defilement of desire; without life, that is, free from the change of birth and death; without person, that is, completely cutting off the boundaries of the past and the future; the characteristic of peace and near peace.
