I thought to myself, 'This place does not appear to be completely pure!' Then, the Blessed One, knowing with his wisdom the thoughts in the mind of the venerable Shariputra, said to the venerable Shariputra, 'Shariputra, what do you think? Is it that the sun and moon are not pure, so the blind cannot see them?' Shariputra replied, 'Blessed One, it is not so. It is the fault of the blind, not the fault of the sun and moon.' The Blessed One said, 'Shariputra, similarly, some sentient beings do not see the qualities and adornments of the Buddha-field of the Tathagata. That is the fault of the sentient beings' lack of understanding, not the fault of the Tathagata. Shariputra, the Buddha-field of the Tathagata is indeed pure, but you do not see it.' Then, Brahma Kapardin said to the venerable Shariputra, 'Venerable Shariputra, do not say that the Buddha-field of the Tathagata is impure. Venerable Shariputra, the Buddha-field of the Blessed One is completely pure. For example, venerable Shariputra, just as the abode of the gods of Paranirmita-vasavartin is adorned, so too I have seen the adornment of the Buddha-field of the Blessed One Shakyamuni Buddha.' Then, the venerable Shariputra said to Brahma Kapardin, 'Brahma, I see this great earth as uneven, full of thorns, cliffs, mountain peaks, ravines, and foul mud.' Brahma Kapardin said, 'To see the Buddha-field as impure in this way, venerable Shariputra, it must be that your mind has high and low places, and your thoughts about the wisdom of the Buddha are impure. Those who have equanimity towards all sentient beings and pure thoughts about the wisdom of the Buddha will see this Buddha-field as completely pure.' Then, the Blessed One pressed the great trichiliocosm of this world with his toe. As soon as he pressed it, this world was piled high with countless jewels and collections of hundreds of thousands of jewels.

Just as countless jewels are arranged and displayed individually, for example, like the Tathāgata's Jewel-Adorned World, with its qualities of infinite jewel adornment, so too is this world. Then, the entire retinue, complete in every way, becomes wondrous, and one feels as if seated upon a cushion adorned with jeweled lotuses. Then, the Blessed One addressed the venerable Śāriputra, saying: Śāriputra, have you seen the adornment of the Buddha-field's qualities? He replied: Blessed One, I have seen it. These adornments are such that I have never seen or heard of them before. He said: Śāriputra, this Buddha-field is always like this, but for the sake of fully ripening inferior beings, the Tathāgata shows the Buddha-field as being flawed with many faults. Śāriputra, just as the sons of gods eat food from the same jeweled vessel, yet due to the differences in the merit they have accumulated, there are differences in the divine food, the nectar that is present. Similarly, Śāriputra, beings born in the same Buddha-field see the adornment of the Buddha-field's qualities of the Buddhas, according to how pure the beings are. When the adornment of the qualities of the Buddha-field appeared, eighty-four thousand beings generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Those five hundred Licchavi youths who had come together with the Licchavi youth Ratnakara also attained the tolerance of compliance. Then, the Blessed One withdrew those miraculous displays, and then the Buddha-field appeared again in its former nature. Then, the gods and humans of the Hearer Vehicle thought: Alas! These conditioned phenomena are impermanent. Having recognized this, thirty-two thousand beings generated the stainless and immaculate pure Dharma-eye towards all dharmas. Eight thousand monks, without taking anything, had their minds completely liberated from the defilements. Eighty-four thousand beings who had faith in the vast Buddha-field also completely accomplished all dharmas.

Recognizing the characteristic of being established in the vicinity of the earth, he generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The first chapter, which is the introduction to the pure Buddha-field, is complete. Again, at that time, in the great city of Vaisali, there was a place called "Immaculate Sound." He had especially served the past victors and planted roots of virtue, attended to and revered many Buddhas, obtained patience, obtained fearlessness, sported with great superknowledge, obtained dharani, obtained fearlessness, vanquished demons and adversaries, deeply entered the profound principles of the Dharma, arose definitively from the Perfection of Wisdom, comprehended skillful means, possessed fearlessness, was skilled in the thoughts and conduct of beings, and taught the Dharma appropriately according to the individual, arising from knowing the superior and non-superior faculties of beings. He diligently practiced and understood this Great Vehicle, acted after thorough examination, abided in the conduct of the Buddha, followed the supreme wisdom like the ocean, was praised, honored, and highly extolled by all the Buddhas, and was revered by Indra, Brahma, and all the protectors of the world. In order to fully ripen sentient beings, he skillfully resided in the great city of Vaisali. To gather unprotected and poor beings, he possessed inexhaustible resources; to gather beings with broken vows, he possessed completely pure morality; to gather hateful, extremely hateful, malicious, immoral, and wrathful beings, he obtained patience and gentleness; to gather lazy beings, he blazed with diligence; to gather disturbed beings, he abided in meditation, mindfulness, and samadhi; to gather beings with corrupt wisdom, he obtained the definitive understanding of wisdom. He wore white clothes and was perfect in the conduct of asceticism. He lived in the household but was not mixed with the desire realm, the form realm, and the formless realm. His sons, wives, and maids also always practiced celibacy. He was surrounded by servants and slaves.
