Having disappeared from this Buddha-field, in an instant, they were dwelling in that most excellent of all world realms. This is the tenth chapter, entitled "Exhaustion and Non-Exhaustion," from the Treasury of Dharma. Then, the Blessed One spoke to the Licchavi Vimalakirti, saying: Son of good family, when you desire to see the Tathagata, how do you see the Tathagata at that time? After the Blessed One spoke thus, the Licchavi Vimalakirti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, when I wish to see the Tathagata, I see by not seeing the Tathagata. I see that it is unborn from the beginning, does not transmigrate to the end, and does not abide even in the present time. Why is that? The nature of suchness of form is the absence of form. The nature of suchness of feeling is the absence of feeling. The nature of suchness of perception is the absence of perception. The nature of suchness of formation is the absence of formation. The nature of suchness of consciousness is the absence of consciousness. The four elements are non-abiding, like the element of space. The six sense bases are unborn, utterly transcending the realm of the eye, utterly transcending the realm of the ear, utterly transcending the realm of the nose, utterly transcending the realm of the tongue, utterly transcending the realm of the body, utterly transcending the realm of the mind. Unmixed with the three realms, free from the three stains, following the three liberations, having attained the three knowledges, having truly attained what was not attained, having reached the end of non-attachment to all dharmas, the limit of reality is unattainable, abiding in suchness, they are mutually separate, not produced by causes, not dependent on conditions, without characteristics, not possessing characteristics, not being a single characteristic, nor being different characteristics, not being realized, nor being completely realized, nor being fully realized, not being on the other shore, nor being on this shore, nor being in the middle, not being here, nor being there,

Neither is it here, nor is it there. Neither is it to be sought by consciousness, nor does it abide in consciousness. Neither is it darkness, nor is it light. It is without name, without sign. Neither is it weak, nor is it endowed with power. It does not abide in a place, nor does it reside in a direction. Neither is it virtuous, nor is it non-virtuous. Neither is it conditioned, nor is it unconditioned. It is not spoken for any purpose. Neither is it giving, nor is it stinginess. Neither is it morality, nor is it immoral morality. Neither is it patience, nor is it hatred. Neither is it diligence, nor is it laziness. Neither is it meditation, nor is it distraction. Neither is it wisdom, nor is it immoral wisdom. Neither is it truth, nor is it falsehood. Neither is it definite departure, nor is it indefinite non-departure. Neither is it going, nor is it not going. All speech and actions are utterly cut off. Neither is it become a field, nor is it not become a field. Neither is it worthy of giving, nor is it not cultivating giving. Neither is it to be taken, nor is it to be touched. It is without sign, uncreated, devoid of number, equal by equality itself, similar by the nature of dharma, without similarity, without similarity of diligence, utterly beyond measure. Neither is it gone, nor is it entered. Neither is it utterly transcended. Neither is it seeing, nor is it hearing, and, distinguishing, and, discerning. All knots are absent. Having obtained equality with the wisdom of omniscience. Having obtained equality in all dharmas and without distinction in all dharmas. In all places there is no fault. There is nothing, no impurity, no thought, no non-thought, unmade, unborn, unrisen, unmanifested, un-universally manifested. Neither will it be born, nor will it not be born. There is no destruction, no alaya, no sorrow, no joy, no waves. It is not to be spoken by all nominal designations. Thus is the Bhagavan.

Such is the body of the departed; it should be viewed in that way. Whoever sees it in that way sees it correctly. Whoever sees it in another way sees it incorrectly. Then, the venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, from which Buddha-field did this son of good family, known as Vimalakirti, pass away and come to this Buddha-field?" The Blessed One said: "Shariputra, you should ask this noble being, 'From where did you pass away and where were you born here?'" Then, the venerable Shariputra said to the Licchavi Vimalakirti: "Son of good family, from where did you pass away and where were you born here?" Vimalakirti said: "Venerable one, does the Dharma that you have realized have any passing away or birth?" He said: "That Dharma has no passing away or birth." He said: "Venerable Shariputra, since all Dharmas have no passing away or birth, why do you think, 'From where did you pass away and where were you born here?' Venerable Shariputra, if a magician conjures up a woman or a man, and you ask him, 'From where did you pass away and where were you born here?' what would he answer?" He said: "Son of good family, a conjuration has no passing away and no birth, so what answer would there be?" He said: "Venerable Shariputra, has the Thus-Gone One not said that all Dharmas are of the nature of illusion?" He said: "Son of good family, it is so." He said: "Venerable Shariputra, since all Dharmas are like the nature of illusion, why do you think, 'From where did you pass away and where were you born here?' Venerable Shariputra, passing away is the characteristic of manifestation. Birth is the continuum of my manifestation. Therefore, even when a Bodhisattva passes away, he does not exhaust the manifestation of the roots of virtue. Even when he is born, he does not connect with the continuum of non-virtue." Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Shariputra: "Shariputra, this son of good family has come from the world-realm of Abhirati, and the Thus-Gone One does not...
