This is the birthplace of animals. This is the world of Yama. This is the state of having no leisure. This is being born with impaired faculties. This is the misconduct of the body. This is the maturation of misconduct committed by the body. This is the misconduct of speech. This is the maturation of misconduct committed by speech. This is the misconduct of mind. Thus, by explaining the Dharma in various ways, the mind, like a wild horse, becomes thoroughly settled. For example, just as a wild horse or yak becomes tame even when struck at its vital point. Similarly, even wild and difficult-to-tame beings become tame through the speech that recounts all suffering. Those Bodhisattvas said: In this way, the Bhagavan Shakyamuni Buddha, abiding in the greatness of the Buddha, miserable and poor sentient beings...

It is wonderful to subdue the wild ones. The great compassion of the Bodhisattvas who dwell in such pure Buddha-fields is also inconceivable. Then, the Licchavi Vimala-kirti said: Good men, it is indeed so, just as you have said. The great compassion of these Bodhisattvas born here is very firm. They do so much for the benefit of sentient beings in this world in one lifetime that even in a world filled with all kinds of fragrances, one could not do so much for the benefit of sentient beings in hundreds of thousands of kalpas. Why is that? Good men, in this Saha world, there are ten dharmas for accumulating merit that will cause them to be completely embraced, and these are not found in other Buddha-fields. What are the ten? They are: to gather the poor with generosity; to gather those who have broken their vows with discipline; to gather the angry with patience; to gather the lazy with diligence; to gather the distracted with meditation; to gather the foolish with wisdom; to show those who are in unfavorable circumstances how to transcend the eight unfavorable circumstances; to show the Great Vehicle to those who practice the Lesser Vehicle; to gather those who have not generated roots of virtue with roots of virtue; and to constantly and continuously ripen sentient beings with the four objects of gathering. These ten dharmas of accumulating merit, which will cause them to be completely embraced, are not found in other Buddha-fields. Those Bodhisattvas said: With how many dharmas does a Bodhisattva, after passing away from this Saha world, go to a pure Buddha-field without being harmed or injured? He said: With eight dharmas, a Bodhisattva, after passing away from this Saha world, will go to a pure Buddha-field without being harmed or injured. What are the eight? One must benefit all sentient beings, without seeking even the slightest benefit from them. One must endure all the sufferings of all sentient beings, and thereby accumulate merit.

Thinking that the root of all giving should be given to all sentient beings, and without anger towards all sentient beings, rejoicing in all Bodhisattvas as if they were teachers, not abandoning the teachings that have been heard and not heard, without envy of others' gains, and not being arrogant with one's own gains, thinking with certainty in mind, reflecting on one's own mistakes, not discussing the faults of others, delighting in mindfulness, and perfectly accepting all virtues. If one possesses these eight qualities, a Bodhisattva, after passing away from the world of suffering, without injury or harm, will go to a pure Buddha-field. Then, the Licchavi Vimalakirti and Manjushri Kumara, in that way, taught the Dharma to the assembled retinue, and thus a hundred thousand beings generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Ten thousand Bodhisattvas attained the patience of non-arising Dharma. This is the ninth chapter, Taking Food by Emanation. Again, at that time, the Blessed One was in the grove guarding the Amra trees, and the courtyard of the Dharma-teaching assembly became vast and spacious. The assembly also appeared like the color of gold. Then, the Venerable Ananda said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, how is it that this grove guarding the Amra trees has become vast and spacious, and all the assembly appears to be the color of gold? Whose omen is this? The Blessed One replied: Ananda, this is the omen that the Licchavi Vimalakirti and Manjushri Kumara, surrounded and escorted by many retinues, are coming into the presence of the Tathagata. Then, the Licchavi Vimalakirti said to Manjushri Kumara: Manjushri, these great beings will also see the Tathagata and pay homage, let us go to the Blessed One. Manjushri said: Sons of good family, if you know the time is right, then let us go. Then, the Licchavi Vimalakirti manifested such miraculous powers, and having manifested these miraculous powers, it was as if all the retinue were seated on lions.
