Not clinging to appearances, but with the aim of practicing virtue, constantly manifesting all roots of goodness, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Taking the six perfections as the realm of practice, guiding the minds and actions of all sentient beings to the other shore, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Taking the six superknowledges as the realm of practice, extinguishing defilements but not taking this as the realm of practice, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Abiding in the sacred Dharma, but not aiming at evil paths, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Regarding the four immeasurables, taking non-attachment to being born in the Brahma realm as the realm of practice, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Taking the six recollections as the realm of practice, not taking all defilements as the realm of practice, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Taking meditation, samadhi, and absorption as the realm of practice, not being reborn by the power of meditation and absorption, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Taking the four mindfulnesses as the realm of practice, not taking body, feeling, mind, and phenomena as the realm of practice, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Taking right abandonment as the realm of practice, not taking good and non-good as the realm of practice, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Cultivating the legs of magical power, taking the effortless mastery of naturally accomplished magical power as the realm of practice, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Taking the five faculties as the realm of practice, knowing the faculties of all sentient beings to be superior and non-superior, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Abiding in the five powers, taking delight in the ten powers of the Tathagata as the realm of practice, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Fully accomplishing the seven branches of enlightenment, taking expertise in the discrimination of wisdom as the realm of practice, this is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Abiding in the path, not aiming at evil paths

That is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Whoever seeks the gathering of tranquility and insight, and does not fall into extreme tranquility in their conduct, that is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Whoever understands all dharmas as having the nature of non-arising, and also in their conduct fully accomplishes the marks and excellent signs, the body of the Buddha, and adornments, that is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Whoever demonstrates the conduct of a Hearer and a Solitary Buddha, and also does not diminish the Dharma of the Buddha in their conduct, that is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Whoever follows all dharmas that have become perfectly pure in their own nature, and also in their conduct demonstrates conduct according to how all sentient beings desire, that is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Whoever has no extreme destruction or formation towards all Buddha-fields, and understands them to be of the nature of space, and also in their conduct demonstrates various arrangements and the qualities of the Buddha-fields arranged in many ways, that is the realm of a Bodhisattva. Whoever turns the wheel of Dharma and demonstrates great Nirvana, and also does not abandon the conduct of a Bodhisattva in their conduct, that is the realm of a Bodhisattva. When this teaching was spoken, among those sons of the gods who had come together with Manjushri, eight thousand sons of the gods generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfectly complete, and fully awakened enlightenment. This is the fourth chapter, entitled "To Be Genuinely Delighted." Then the venerable Shariputra thought to himself: "There are not even cushions in this house, where will these Bodhisattvas and great Hearers sit?" Then Vimalakirti, the Licchavi, knowing the thought of the venerable Shariputra, said this to the venerable Shariputra: "Venerable Shariputra, have you come desiring the Dharma, or desiring a seat?" He replied: "I have come desiring the Dharma, not desiring a seat." He said: "Venerable Shariputra, therefore, whoever desires the Dharma, do they not also desire my body? Desiring a seat

How should it be viewed? Venerable Shariputra, whoever desires the Dharma does not desire form, feeling, perception, formation, or consciousness. They do not desire aggregates, realms, or sources. Whoever desires the Dharma does not desire the desire realm, the form realm, or the formless realm. Whoever desires the Dharma does not desire manifest attachment to the Buddha, nor do they desire manifest attachment to the Dharma and the Sangha. Venerable Shariputra, furthermore, whoever desires the Dharma does not desire to fully understand suffering, nor do they desire to abandon the origin, nor do they desire to realize cessation, nor do they desire to cultivate the path. Why is that? The Dharma is without elaboration, without letters. Therefore, to understand suffering, to abandon the origin, to realize cessation, to cultivate the path—whoever speaks in this way does not desire the Dharma, but desires elaboration. Venerable Shariputra, the Dharma is near peace and utterly peaceful. Therefore, those who engage in birth and death do not desire the Dharma, nor do they desire solitude, but they desire birth and death. Venerable Shariputra, furthermore, the Dharma is without dust and free from dust. Therefore, those who are attached to any Dharma, even to Nirvana, do not desire the Dharma, but they desire the dust of attachment. The Dharma is not an object; those who are satisfied with objects do not desire the Dharma, but they desire objects. The Dharma is without taking and without abandoning. Those who grasp and reject any Dharma do not desire the Dharma, but they desire grasping and rejecting. The Dharma is without a basis. Those who delight in a basis do not desire the Dharma, but they desire a basis. The Dharma is without characteristics and empty. Those whose consciousness follows after characteristics do not desire the Dharma, but they desire characteristics. The Dharma is not co-existent. Those who abide together with the Dharma do not desire the Dharma, but they desire abiding. The Dharma is not seeing, hearing, discerning, or knowing.
