May the intention of the Dharma be completely fulfilled! Then, those goddesses bowed to Vimalakirti and said this: Householder, how can we abide in the realm of Mara? He replied: Sisters, there is a Dharma gate called the 'Inexhaustible Lamp.' Strive diligently in it. What is it? It is like this: Sisters, even if a hundred thousand lamps are lit from one lamp, that lamp will not diminish. Similarly, sisters, even if one Bodhisattva leads hundreds of thousands of beings to enlightenment, that Bodhisattva's mind and memory will not diminish. Not only will it not diminish, but it will also increase. Similarly, all virtuous Dharmas, the more they are taught and shown to others, the more all virtuous Dharmas increase. This is the Dharma gate called the 'Inexhaustible Lamp.' When you abide in the realm of Mara, make countless gods and goddesses believe in the mind of enlightenment. In this way, you will repay the kindness of the Tathagata and also become the sustenance for all sentient beings. Then, those goddesses bowed their heads to the feet of the Licchavi Vimalakirti and returned with Mara. World Honored One, I have personally seen the extraordinary transformation of the Licchavi Vimalakirti. World Honored One, therefore, I am unwilling to visit that noble being. Then, the World Honored One said to the merchant's son, Well-Given: Son of good family, go and inquire about the illness of the Licchavi Vimalakirti. Well-Given also reported: World Honored One, I am unwilling to visit that noble being. What is the reason for this? World Honored One, I clearly remember that once in my father's courtyard, in order to hold a grand sacrifice, I gave alms to all the Shramanas, Brahmins, as well as the poor, the suffering, the miserly, the afflicted, and the beggars. There, I held a grand sacrifice with seven umbrellas, and under that last umbrella, the Licchavi Vimalakirti

Having arrived at that place, he said to me, "Son of a merchant, it is not proper for you to make offerings in this way. You should make Dharma offerings. What good will material offerings do for you?" I said to him, "How should Dharma offerings be made?" He said to me, "Dharma offerings are those that, at any time, cause all sentient beings to become fully ripened. That is Dharma offering." And what is that? It is like this: great love perfectly accomplished by the mind of enlightenment; great compassion perfectly accomplished by the collection of the sacred Dharma; great joy perfectly accomplished by focusing on the supreme happiness of all sentient beings; great equanimity perfectly accomplished by the collection of knowledge; the perfection of generosity perfectly accomplished by peace and discipline; the perfection of morality perfectly accomplished by fully ripening sentient beings who are immoral; the perfection of patience perfectly accomplished by the doctrine of selflessness; the perfection of diligence perfectly accomplished by striving for enlightenment; the perfection of meditation perfectly accomplished by the solitude of body and mind; the perfection of wisdom perfectly accomplished by the omniscient wisdom; meditating on emptiness perfectly accomplished by fully ripening all sentient beings; meditating on the signless perfectly accomplished by completely purifying conditioned phenomena; meditating on the wishless perfectly accomplished by being born at will; subduing with strength perfectly accomplished by fully upholding the sacred Dharma; the life force perfectly accomplished by the objects of collection; being a servant and disciple of all sentient beings, perfectly accomplished by lack of pride; obtaining the body, life, and enjoyment perfectly accomplished by taking essence from the meaningless; mindfulness perfectly accomplished by the six recollections; and the intention perfectly accomplished by the Dharma that causes true joy.

Blessed One, in this way, when that householder proclaimed this teaching, two hundred Brahmins from that Brahmin assembly generated the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. I also generated faith and a sense of wonder, prostrated at the feet of that noble being, and unstrung a pearl necklace worth a hundred thousand from my neck and offered it to him, but he was unwilling to accept that pearl necklace, and I said to him, 'Please accept this and give it to whomever you please.' At that time,
