are pure. By relying on and cultivating these four immeasurables, making them abundant, one will attain the pliancy of mind. Having attained the pliancy of mind, one will abide in the first dhyana. Similarly, one will abide in the second, similarly, one will abide in the third, and similarly, one will abide in the fourth. Therefore, by attaining dhyana, one will attain lightness of body and mind. Because one possesses lightness of body and mind, one will enter and realize the superknowledges. Because one possesses entering and realizing the superknowledges, one will generate the legs of magical power from aspiration, effort, mind, or wisdom. Among these, aspiration is the inclination to manifest those dharmas. Effort is the practice of those dharmas. Mind is the contemplation of those dharmas. Wisdom is being skilled in those dharmas. Therefore, by realizing the legs of magical power, one will realize them as they are, hence they are called legs of magical power. Among these, aspiration accomplishes it. Effort perfects it. Mind establishes it. Wisdom distinguishes it. The legs of magical power of the bodhisattvas arise from faith and desire, are without fabrication, are empowered by their own generation of mind, go as they wish, are completely purified, are firmly established in the root, pervade all places, are unimpeded like a red wind, and extend to the limit of space. Son of the venerable Sharadvatiputra, these are the four inexhaustible legs of magical power of the bodhisattvas. Son of the venerable Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, the bodhisattvas have five inexhaustible roots. What are the five roots? They are the root of faith, the root of effort, the root of mindfulness, the root of samadhi, and the root of wisdom. What is the root of faith? It is the faith by which one has faith in the four dharmas. What are the four? They are, for example, having faith in the worldly right view that is practiced in samsara, which relies on the ripening of karma. Whether it is virtuous or non-virtuous karma, whatever karma is created, one will experience the corresponding ripening of that karma, thinking,

Also, not committing sinful deeds for oneself, and having faith in the conduct of Bodhisattvas. Having entered into that conduct, not generating desire for other vehicles. Regarding all dharmas, ascertaining the profound meaning of ultimate truth, namely, dependent arising, selflessness, absence of sentient beings, absence of life, absence of nurturer, absence of personality, and discriminating. And having faith in the nature of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Not making all views and habitual tendencies into habitual tendencies, and having faith in all the Buddha dharmas such as powers and fearlessness. Because of faith, being free from doubt and timidity, thereby truly practicing those Buddha dharmas. This is called the root of faith. Then, what is the root of diligence? Those dharmas that are believed in by the root of faith, are truly practiced by the root of diligence. This is called the root of diligence. Then, what is the root of mindfulness? Those dharmas that are truly practiced by the root of diligence, are not let go of by the root of mindfulness. This is called the root of mindfulness. Then, what is the root of samadhi? Those dharmas that are not let go of by the root of mindfulness, are made one-pointed by the root of samadhi. This is called the root of samadhi. Then, what is the root of wisdom? Those dharmas that are made one-pointed by the root of samadhi, are well considered and thoroughly understood by the root of wisdom. Regarding those dharmas, knowing without relying on others, and knowing individually by one's own wisdom, this is called the root of wisdom. Thus, these five roots accompany each other and are interconnected, thereby perfecting all the Buddha dharmas. It should also be placed in the place of prophecy. Venerable son of Sharadvati, for example, the five superknowledges of non-Buddhists, for beings who have entered the womb, as long as their male and female organs have not yet manifested and been established, they will not prophesy. Similarly, the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-Tathagatas, are also like that, Bodhicitta...
