It will not degenerate. The mindfulness of contemplating the Dharma in relation to the Dharmas is a word that extensively teaches the immeasurable. It is a universally practiced realm, a correct entry into all the Buddha's teachings, satisfying all sentient beings, defeating all demons, and realizing self-originated wisdom. This is called the mindfulness of contemplating the Dharma in relation to the Dharmas for Bodhisattvas. Venerable son of Śāradvatī, these are the inexhaustible four mindfulnesses cultivated by Bodhisattvas. Venerable son of Śāradvatī, furthermore, the four correct abandonments of Bodhisattvas are also inexhaustible. What are the four? They are as follows: For the sake of not generating unwholesome and sinful dharmas that have not yet arisen, one generates desire, strives, makes effort, and initiates diligence, holding the mind completely and abiding correctly. For the sake of abandoning unwholesome and sinful dharmas that have already arisen, one generates desire, strives, makes effort, and initiates diligence, holding the mind completely and abiding correctly. For the sake of generating wholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen, one generates desire, strives, makes effort, and initiates diligence, holding the mind completely and abiding correctly. For the sake of maintaining, cultivating, increasing, not decaying, not degenerating, and making exceedingly vast wholesome dharmas that have already arisen, one generates desire, strives, makes effort, and initiates diligence, holding the mind completely and abiding correctly. The statement, "For the sake of not generating unwholesome and sinful dharmas that have not yet arisen, one generates desire," is a common expression for proper attention. The statement, "Strives, makes effort, and initiates diligence," is a common expression for not abandoning proper attention. The statement, "Holding the mind completely and abiding correctly," is a common expression for proper thought. Why is that? Because proper and complete engagement prevents the universal practice of unwholesome and sinful dharmas. So, what are the unwholesome and sinful dharmas? They are those that are discordant with morality, discordant with samādhi, and discordant with wisdom. So, morality

What is the opposite of discipline? Whatever dharma that causes discipline to be broken, and that also causes the discipline of others to be broken, whatever becomes the opposite of the aggregate of discipline, this is called the opposite of discipline. What is the opposite of samadhi? Whatever dharma that causes rituals to be broken, and that also causes the minds of others to be distracted, whatever becomes the opposite of the aggregate of samadhi, this is called the opposite of samadhi. What is the opposite of wisdom? Whatever dharma that causes views to be broken, and that also causes the views of others to be broken, arising universally, obscuring, and severing, whatever becomes the opposite of the aggregate of wisdom, this is called the opposite of wisdom, this is called sinful and unwholesome dharmas. By what means does proper attention not open the opportunity for sinful and unwholesome dharmas that have not yet arisen to arise, this is called the first correct abandonment. Also, in order to abandon sinful and unwholesome dharmas that have already arisen, generating desire, striving, exerting effort, focusing the mind and abiding correctly, this is called the supreme word of proper attention. Why is this so? Because these sinful and unwholesome dharmas have not become aggregates in the mind, they do not abide in a place, they do not abide in a direction, and they cannot be established. Knowing the abandonment of the universal arising of these sinful and unwholesome dharmas in the mind, whether it is the cause and condition by which desire arises in the form of suffering, or hatred arises in the form of anger, or ignorance arises in the form of delusion, by attending to these with impure proper attention, desire is pacified, by love, hatred is pacified, by entering into dependent origination, delusion is pacified, whatever pacifies these afflictions, this is called abandonment. In the ultimate sense of nominal designation, there is no dharma to be abandoned there, because all dharmas are manifest in equality, therefore also

It is called pure abandonment, this is the second correct abandonment. Whenever a virtuous dharma has not arisen, in order to generate it, one generates intention, strives, exerts diligence, grasps the mind, and correctly abides, this is the extreme explanation of the immeasurable word. Why is that? Because the dharmas that Bodhisattvas must correctly practice are immeasurable. Among them, intention is the root of all virtuous dharmas, diligence is the correct practice of all virtuous dharmas, correctly grasping the mind enables all virtuous dharmas to be realized, contemplating and distinguishing these virtuous dharmas, this is the third correct abandonment. Whenever virtuous dharmas have arisen, in order to abide, cultivate, increase, not regress, not diminish, and extremely increase, one generates intention, strives, exerts diligence, grasps the mind, and correctly abides, this is the supreme word of the root of virtue completely dedicated to Bodhi. Why is that? Because the root of virtue completely dedicated to Bodhi will not be exhausted in the middle until the end of the essence of Bodhi is reached. Why is that? Because this root of virtue does not abide in all three realms, any root of virtue that abides in the three realms will eventually be exhausted; any root of virtue that does not abide in the three realms but is completely dedicated to all-knowingness will not be exhausted in the middle until the end of the essence of Bodhi is reached. These are the four correct abandonments of the Bodhisattva. Venerable son of Sharadvati, these are the four inexhaustible correct abandonments of the Bodhisattvas. End of Volume Seven. Venerable son of Sharadvati, there are also the four inexhaustible miraculous feet of the Bodhisattvas, what are the four? They are: intention, diligence, mind, and contemplation. The root, support, and place of these are love, compassion, joy, equanimity, and the four immeasurables.
