The fool, and the one who follows with faith, and the one who follows the Dharma, and the eighth one, and the stream-enterer, and the once-returner, and the non-returner, and the Arhat, and the Pratyekabuddha, and the Bodhisattva, if one person appears in the world, it benefits many beings, brings happiness to many beings, has compassion for the world, for the sake of the benefit of many beings of gods and humans, for the sake of benefit, for the sake of happiness, the teacher of gods and humans, the Buddha Bhagavan, the only one who appeared in the world, this is called a person. All these designations of "person" are shown by the Tathagata as a means of guiding sentient beings through the realm of conventional truth. Those who cling to this are called unreliable. In order to make them trust, the Bhagavan also said: Rely on the Dharma-nature, not on a person. So, what is the Dharma-nature? It is: unchanging, without addition, without purification, without extreme purification, not abiding, not extremely abiding, without root, equal in all ways, equal to the equal, equal to the unequal, equal to the equal and the unequal, without discrimination, without fabrication, obtaining faultlessness in all dharmas, and the nature of pure space, these qualities are called Dharma-nature. Those who rely on the Dharma-nature do not rely on any realm. Therefore, by entering the path of Dharma in this way, since all dharmas are relied upon, all dharmas are transformed into Dharma-nature itself, this is called relying on Dharma-nature, not relying on a person. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, these are the four inexhaustible reliances of the Bodhisattvas. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, furthermore, the accumulations of merit and wisdom of the Bodhisattvas are also inexhaustible. So, what is the inexhaustible accumulation of merit of the Bodhisattvas? It is: the object of merit arising from generosity, and discipline, and
