Well then, it is like this: equanimity towards afflictions, equanimity for the sake of protecting oneself and others, and equanimity towards time and non-time. Among these, what is equanimity towards afflictions? Not thinking highly of being respected, not thinking lowly of not being respected, not being arrogant when gaining, not being disappointed when not gaining, not being particularly happy when hearing pleasant things, not being discouraged when hearing unpleasant things, not dying from being slandered, abiding in the nature of reality when praised, having the power to individually discern suffering, seeing impermanence in happiness, having the power to discern suffering, abandoning subsequent attachment, abandoning anger and being friendly, having equanimity towards friends and non-friends, possessing discipline, having equanimity towards those who break discipline, not differentiating between good deeds and bad deeds, not looking at what is lovely and unlovely, not being weary of hearing good and bad things, not having latent habits towards good and bad speech, equally measuring the faults of tasting flavors, having equal thoughts towards all sentient beings, not caring for body and life, giving equal radiance to the superior, middling, and inferior, having equanimity towards praise and non-praise, and purifying one's own mind completely towards truth and untruth. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, in this way, not thinking highly or lowly of those who respect and harm, therefore the Bodhisattva is equanimous. Venerable Sharadvatiputra, this is called the equanimity of Bodhisattvas towards afflictions. Now, what is the equanimity of Bodhisattvas for the sake of protecting themselves and others? Even if the body, limbs, and minor limbs of a Bodhisattva are cut off, they do not become angry and do not seek revenge; this is equanimity. Whether it is a change in body or a change in speech, they are able to endure both, therefore it is called equanimity. The form of the eye is not injured, the form of the object is not injured, neither is injured.

Likewise, not with the ear, not with sound, not with the nose, not with smell, not with the tongue, not with taste, not with the body, not with touch, nor with the form of mind is harm done, nor with the form of dharma is harm done, therefore it is called equanimity. Because it does not harm and is without decay, therefore it is called equanimity. Because it does not harm what has been harmed, therefore it is called equanimity. Because it protects oneself and others, therefore it is called equanimity. Because it equally applies to what is beneficial and what is harmful, therefore it is called equanimity. Equanimity is the supreme non-contention. Equanimity is to think definitely about one's own mind. Equanimity is to protect the minds of others. Equanimity is to contemplate oneself. Equanimity is to not harm other sentient beings. Equanimity is the state of meditative equipoise of a Bodhisattva. This is called the equanimity of a Bodhisattva protecting oneself and others. What is the equanimity of a Bodhisattva at the right time and the wrong time? The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, do not command that Bodhisattvas should be equanimous about everything. Why is that? Because Bodhisattvas should always diligently and earnestly seek the virtuous dharmas of themselves and others. Therefore, they should be equanimous at the right time and the wrong time. What is equanimity at the right time and the wrong time? Equanimity towards those who are not vessels and sentient beings who do not want to listen, equanimity towards what is not obtained, what is reviled, what is unpleasant, and what is painful, equanimity towards sentient beings who have entered the Hearer Vehicle without fault, equanimity in abandoning morality at the time of giving, equanimity in abandoning giving at the time of morality, equanimity in abandoning diligence at the time of patience, equanimity in abandoning meditation at the time of diligence, equanimity in abandoning attachment to giving at the time of meditation, equanimity in abandoning the focus on the five perfections at the time of wisdom. This is called equanimity at the right time and the wrong time. Thus, not doing what should not be done, this is equanimity.
