Because of being without (limits), great compassion arises as immeasurable. Because it arises from obtaining the body of the Tathagata, great compassion is not regarding my own body. Because it arises from not doing all evils, great compassion is not trusting in life. Because it arises from the mind of enlightenment, great compassion is protecting others. Because one's own mind arises from being completely pure, great compassion is protecting sentient beings. Because it arises from eliminating the suffering of all sentient beings, great compassion is looking after the poor, the suffering, and the helpless. Because it arises from not changing the mind, great compassion is relying on vows. Because it arises from not deceiving oneself, the Buddhas, and the gods, great compassion is looking at the truth. Because it arises from well-done actions, great compassion is pure conduct. Because it arises from giving great happiness to others, great compassion is giving up my own happiness. Because it arises from being without craving, great compassion is generating the happiness of others. Because it arises from initiating steadfast diligence, great compassion is carrying the burden of all sentient beings. Because it arises from taking upon oneself the faults of sentient beings with little power, great compassion is properly taking the patience of the lama. Because it arises from attending to sick sentient beings, great compassion is eliminating attachment and contempt. Because it arises from completely ripening sentient beings who are devoted to the inferior, great compassion is obtaining mastery of the Dharma. Because it arises from praising the qualities of others, great compassion is not boasting of one's own qualities. Because it arises from desiring uncontaminated bliss, great compassion is not caring about all suffering. Because it arises from doing deeds well and not regretting them, great compassion is completely giving away miserable and impoverished things. Because it arises from protecting sentient beings who have broken vows, great compassion arises from having well-protected vows. Because it arises from obtaining the vajra body, great compassion is accepting harm to the body. Because it arises from not regarding body and life, great

Great compassion is what ripens all sentient beings. Since it arises from completely giving away limbs and parts of limbs, great compassion is unsparing. Since it arises from not desiring one's own roots of virtue, great compassion generates the roots of virtue of other sentient beings. Furthermore, since it arises from focusing on the desire realm, great compassion does not taste the flavor of meditative absorption. Since it arises from the appearance of immaculate wisdom, great compassion is all-illuminating. Since it arises from not denigrating roots of virtue and all accumulations, great compassion does not rely on wisdom. Since it arises from fulfilling the intentions of all sentient beings, great compassion is universally generous. Since it arises from not abandoning previous aspirations, great compassion thoroughly liberates all sentient beings. Since it arises from ripening sentient beings in conditioned phenomena, great compassion does not touch unconditioned phenomena. Since it arises from establishing beings in the discipline of the Buddha, great compassion gazes upon beings who have broken their discipline. O monk, son of Śāradvatī, whatever the definitive emergence of a bodhisattva may be, all of them are born from great compassion; therefore, it is called great compassion. Thus, practicing generosity, practicing discipline, practicing patience, practicing diligence, practicing meditative concentration, practicing wisdom, practicing skillful means, and practicing all the aspects of enlightenment is great compassion. Accomplishing one's own benefit, accomplishing self-originated wisdom, doing what is excellent, being without regret, and not being devoured by demons is great compassion. Since it arises from individually abiding close to what activity all sentient beings have, therefore it is called great compassion. O monk, son of Śāradvatī, this is called the inexhaustible great compassion of the bodhisattvas. Fifth fascicle. O monk, son of Śāradvatī, furthermore, the great joy of the bodhisattvas is also inexhaustible. What is that great joy? Whatever is the Dharma of the Buddha
