The loving-kindness of the Shravakas is self-protection. The great loving-kindness of the Bodhisattvas is completely protecting all sentient beings. Oh, son of the monk Sharadvatiputra, loving-kindness is liberation from the river. Oh, son of the monk Sharadvatiputra, loving-kindness is these three, which three? That is, loving-kindness focused on sentient beings, loving-kindness focused on dharma, and the unconditioned

is loving-kindness. Among them, the loving-kindness that focuses on sentient beings is that of the Bodhisattvas who have generated the initial mind. The loving-kindness that focuses on the Dharma is that of the Bodhisattvas who have entered into practice. The loving-kindness without an object is that of the Bodhisattvas who have obtained tolerance of the unborn Dharma. Venerable son of Sharadvati, this is called the inexhaustible loving-kindness of the Bodhisattvas. Venerable son of Sharadvati, furthermore, the great compassion of the Bodhisattvas is also inexhaustible. What is the reason for that? Because it is a precursor. Venerable son of Sharadvati, for example, exhaling and inhaling are precursors to the life force of a great person. Similarly, in order to perfectly accomplish the Great Vehicle, the great compassion of the Bodhisattva is a precursor. For example, the precious wheel of a Chakravartin king is a precursor to the seven precious things. Similarly, for Bodhisattvas to perfectly accomplish the omniscient wisdom, great compassion is a precursor. For example, just as a merchant or householder cherishes their only son from the bottom of their heart, similarly, a Bodhisattva who dwells in great compassion cherishes all sentient beings from the bottom of their heart. Venerable son of Sharadvati, what is called great compassion is called great compassion because one does it oneself. Because it is one's own action, it is great compassion. Because one cannot find other opportunities, it is great compassion. Because it arises from non-deception, great compassion is done from the depths of one's heart. Because it arises from non-falsity, great compassion is action. Because it arises from non-retrogression, great compassion is done with higher intention. Because it arises from non-fabrication, the nature of great compassion is wisdom. Because it arises from the straight path, the nature of great compassion is completely pure. Because it arises from clarity, great compassion is a mind without defilement. Because it arises from reverence for all sentient beings, great compassion is without arrogance. Sentient beings measure
