Fifth, (5) knowing the path. What is meant by knowing the path is not to cling to all dharmas that have become equality. This is the bodhisattva's knowledge of the truth. The bodhisattva knows the four noble truths in this way with wisdom and insight, but does not manifest them for the sake of sentient beings, and completely matures sentient beings. This is called the bodhisattva's skill in the truth. Furthermore, the bodhisattva's truth is of three kinds. What are the three? They are the conventional truth, the ultimate truth, and the nature truth. What is the conventional truth? It is all that is expressed by worldly terms, letters, sounds, and symbols. What is the ultimate truth? It is that which the mind does not go to, let alone letters. What is the nature truth? It is that all natures are one nature, and that one nature is also without nature. The bodhisattva does not become completely weary even by teaching the conventional truth, nor does he fall into manifesting the ultimate truth. Although he realizes the truth as one with the nature truth, he still completely matures sentient beings. This is called the bodhisattva's skill in the truth. Furthermore, there are two kinds of truth. What are the two? They are the nominal truth and the ultimate truth. What is the nominal truth? It is speaking the truth when the time is ripe, that is, the truth of suffering, the truth of origin, the truth of cessation, the truth of the path, and the worldly nominal truth, as well as all that is expressed by letters, sounds, and symbols. What is the ultimate truth? It is the inexpressible nature of dharma, that is, nirvana. Why? Because it is always the suchness of dharma, and its essence is eternal. The bodhisattva does not become completely weary even by teaching the nominal truth, nor does he fall into manifesting the ultimate truth, and he completely matures sentient beings. This is called the bodhisattva's skill in the truth. Furthermore, there is only one truth, not two.

Furthermore, one truth is that there is no fabrication of all dharmas, and it also thoroughly immerses beings who are prone to fabrication into the truth. Therefore, a Bodhisattva is not weary of teaching the truth of fabrication, nor does he openly reveal the one truth of non-fabrication, and he also fully matures beings; this is called a Bodhisattva being skilled in the truth. Furthermore, the five aggregates are suffering; the characteristic of suffering of the five aggregates is called suffering. Whoever realizes that the characteristic of suffering is emptiness, this is the noble truth of knowing suffering as suffering. The cause of craving and the cause of views of the five aggregates lie dormant; this is called arising. Whoever does not accept those causes of craving and causes of views, does not fabricate, and does not touch them, this is called the noble truth of knowing arising as arising. When those five aggregates are completely exhausted and cease, not arising at the former end, nor transferring to the latter end, and there is no result of having arisen now, this is the noble truth of cessation. Whoever knows it in this way, this is called the noble truth of knowing cessation as cessation. The path upon which one relies to know suffering, to know arising, and to know cessation, and which touches and enters into non-dual wisdom, that is called the noble truth of the path that goes to the cessation of suffering. Whoever knows this as emptiness, this is called the noble truth of knowing the path as the path. Whoever understands these four noble truths in this way with wisdom, and does not discriminate with the discrimination of truth, this is called a Bodhisattva being skilled in the truth. Furthermore, all feelings are suffering; this is called suffering. To distinguish and recognize that feeling is called the noble truth of knowing suffering as suffering. What cause does that feeling arise from? This is called arising. Whoever fully knows that cause as it truly is, this is the noble truth of knowing arising as arising.

It is called Truth. When all feelings are completely ceased, even the absence of feeling is felt, and the cessation of feeling is contemplated, for the sake of looking at sentient beings, even the cessation of feeling is not made manifest, this is, knowing cessation as cessation, is called the Noble Truth. The path accomplished by whatever feeling is like a raft, whoever desires feeling does not desire the path. This is, knowing the path as the path, is called the Noble Truth. Whoever sees these four truths in this way, and contemplates equally with purity, this is called the Bodhisattva being skilled in Truth. Furthermore, in short, birth is suffering, this is called suffering. Whatever wisdom contemplates non-birth, this is, knowing suffering as suffering, is called the Noble Truth. Birth arises from the cause of existence, whatever existence is, that is the origin. Whoever knows the destruction of existence, this is, knowing the origin as the origin, is called the Noble Truth. All birth is non-birth, that is, non-birth is cessation. Whoever is unborn, there is no cessation whatsoever, whoever knows no cessation, this is, knowing the cessation of exhaustion, is called the Noble Truth. Whatever wisdom thus satisfies, and measures, and seeks, and contemplates, and enters, this is, knowing the path as the path, is called the Noble Truth. Whoever enters this wisdom of truth, and also does not abide in the wisdom of truth, this is called the Bodhisattva being skilled in Truth. Among them, what is the Bodhisattva being skilled in dependent origination? For example, from arising from improper attention, ignorance arises. From the arising of ignorance, actions arise. From the arising of actions, consciousness arises. From the arising of consciousness, name and form arise. From the arising of name and form, the six sense sources arise. From the arising of the six sense sources, contact arises. From the arising of contact, feeling arises. From the arising of feeling, craving arises. From the arising of craving, grasping arises. From the arising of grasping, existence arises. All existence
