It is a word that does not dwell in the aggregates. Similarly, it is a word that does not dwell in the realm of the ear, sound, and ear consciousness; the nose, smell, and nose consciousness; the tongue, taste, and tongue consciousness; the body, touch, and body consciousness; the mind, dharma, and mind consciousness. It is a word that relies on meaning. It is a word that relies on dharma. It is a word that relies on wisdom. It is a word that relies on the sutras of definitive meaning. Son of the venerable Sharadvati, furthermore, what is called 'appropriate attention' is all dharmas. Why is that? Just as I am without self, all dharmas are seen by reason. Just as sentient beings are without self, all dharmas are seen by reason. When seen in this way, it is seen appropriately. Whatever is appropriate in the realm of samsara is also appropriate in the realm of nirvana. Whoever sees them as equal and without distinction is called 'thoroughly appropriate attention.' Whoever sees the nature of all defilements and the nature of purification as equal and without distinction is called 'thoroughly appropriate attention.' Whoever does not think about reason and unreason is 'thoroughly appropriate attention.' Son of the venerable Sharadvati, in short, all the appropriate attentions of a Bodhisattva, the place of all of them is sentient beings. He does not abandon the place of sentient beings, nor does he disturb the place of dharma. That is called the Bodhisattva's entering into appropriate attention. Son of the venerable Sharadvati, thus, the aspect of its dharma, the aspect of hearing, and the cause of entering into appropriate attention are in harmony, that is called wisdom. Here, wisdom does not dwell together with sixteen companions. What are the sixteen? That is, it does not dwell together with the companion of ignorance. Similarly, it does not dwell together with the companions of action, consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, birth, and old age and death. Also, he does not dwell together with the companion who obstructs ignorance. Likewise, he does not dwell together with the companion who obstructs formations, consciousness, name and form, the six sense sources, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, existence, birth, and old age and death. He does not dwell together with the companion of the view of the aggregation of existence, and he does not dwell together with the companion of the sixty-two views that arise from the root of the view of the aggregation of existence. He does not dwell together with the companion of high and low, and he does not dwell together with the companion of worldly dharmas, gain and no gain, pleasant and unpleasant, blame and praise, happiness and suffering. He does not dwell together with the companion of anger, resentment, concealment, affliction, jealousy, stinginess, deceit, flattery, shamelessness, lack of embarrassment, pride, contention, conceit, carelessness, arrogance, excessive arrogance, arrogance beyond arrogance, the arrogance of "I am," the arrogance of thinking little, manifest arrogance, and wrong arrogance, and he does not dwell together with the companion of all the near afflictions. He does not dwell together with the companion of the subtle, coarse, small, medium, and large arising of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, and he does not dwell together with the companion of all the arising of afflictions. He does not dwell together with the companion of the darkness of ignorance, the dim haze, the obscuration, and the determination, and he does not dwell together with the companion of all the arising of dharmas that are in accordance with the part of decay. He does not dwell together with desire, the noise of the household, the aggregates, the afflictions, the lord of death, and the demons of the sons of the gods, and he does not dwell together with all the deeds of the demons. He does not dwell together with the companion of the real clinging to self, sentient beings, life, nourishment, person, individual, mind-born, and maker, and he does not dwell together with all the real clinging to clinging.
