One should observe with patience. Because it completely transcends all harm done by others, one should observe with patience. Because one obtains all the Buddha's teachings, one should observe with patience. Son of the venerable Śāradvatī, with those thirty-two aspects, observe the patience of the Bodhisattvas. Among them, what is completely pure patience? Because one thoroughly understands that speech is like the sound of an echo in a valley, one does not retaliate when insulted; because one thoroughly understands that the body is like an image, one does not strike back when beaten; because one thoroughly understands that the mind is like an illusion, one does not scold back when rebuked; because the superior intention is pacified, one does not become angry when angered; because one's own qualities are complete, one does not become angry because of not being praised, nor does one think oneself superior; one does not become attached because of praise; because one is extremely subdued, one has no joy in gain; because one is completely peaceful, one has no anger in not gaining; because one thoroughly examines with knowledge, one does not marvel at pleasant words; because one's mind is broad, one does not become discouraged by unpleasant words; because one is well-established, one does not think oneself inferior because of being criticized; because one is unwavering, one does not think oneself superior because of being praised; because one looks upon sentient beings, one is not completely weary of suffering; because the happiness of conditioned things is impermanent, one does not rejoice in happiness; because one does not abide, one is not defiled by the things of the world; because one does not harm others, one endures harm to oneself; in order to perfect the accumulation of the limbs of enlightenment, one also undertakes the cutting of limbs and minor limbs; because one desires the body of the Buddha, one also endures the cutting of one's own body; in order to generate the power of well-done actions, one endures all evil deeds; because one is heroic in destroying all non-Buddhists, one endures suffering and does not weary of all suffering; in order to overwhelm Indra, Brahma, and the protectors of the world, one strives in all ascetic practices. Son of the venerable Śāradvatī, moreover, what is called patience is that which does not leave any wounds in the mind. Why is that? Because of non-attachment, it is said that one can endure insults.
