All dharmas are said to be without characteristics. World Holder, if the unborn has characteristics? If the unceasing has characteristics? If the unstaying and unmoving have characteristics, then the Bhagavan would also certainly say that the unconditioned also has characteristics. World Holder, if the unconditioned has characteristics, then it is not unconditioned. It is said to have characteristics, and for those foolish ordinary people who enumerate dharmas, the conditioned has three characteristics: arising, ceasing, staying, and moving. The three characteristics of the unconditioned are unborn, unceasing, unstaying, and unmoving. World Holder, if a person understands and realizes the dharmas of the conditioned and unconditioned, then that person has no arising, ceasing, staying, and moving. Therefore, this is called attaining the unconditioned. World Holder, arising and ceasing are understanding and seeing the meaning of dependent origination. If dharma has no dependent origination, there is no arising. If dependent origination does not arise, there is no turning back, and there is no staying and moving. World Holder, these are called seeing and knowing the suchness of the conditioned as it truly is. Whoever knows and sees it as it truly is does not fall into the enumeration of arising, ceasing, staying, and moving. The Bodhisattva thus regards the dharmas of the conditioned and unconditioned, thinking that the dharmas of the conditioned are not together with the dharmas of the unconditioned, and the dharmas of the unconditioned are not together with the dharmas of the conditioned. And thinking, the true characteristic of the dharmas of the conditioned is the unconditioned itself, thus thinking without discriminating. Not discriminating between the conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, that itself is the unconditioned dharma. If one discriminates between the conditioned and unconditioned, then one will not understand and realize the unconditioned. Whoever completely cuts off all discriminations, that can be said to understand and realize the suchness of the unconditioned. Understanding the characteristic of the object of focus, cutting off all objects of focus, not discriminating between countable or uncountable.

World Holder, those Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are in accordance with conditioned and unconditioned dharmas. That is to say, because they do not fixate on conditioned or unconditioned dharmas, they neither cling nor grasp. This is the tenth chapter, called "Conditioned and Unconditioned." World Holder, if Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas are very skilled in the five aggregates, very skilled in the eighteen elements, very skilled in the twelve sources, very skilled in the twelve links of dependent origination, very skilled in the four mindfulnesses, very skilled in the five faculties, very skilled in the eightfold noble path, very skilled in worldly and transworldly dharmas, and very skilled in conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, then they are also very skilled in the true nature of all dharmas. They are also very skilled in distinguishing the characteristics of dharmas, and having obtained the power of mindfulness and possessing the wisdom to distinguish the words of all dharmas, and as soon as this body is abandoned, they will possess uninterrupted mindfulness and attain unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. World Holder, in the past, immeasurable and countless eons ago, at that time, there appeared in the world a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha named Jambu River Golden Mountain King, who was endowed with knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, unsurpassed, tamer of beings, charioteer, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavan. World Holder, the lifespan of Bhagavan Jambu River Golden Mountain King was five eons. The assembly of Shravakas was also immeasurable. That Buddha-field was completely pure and endowed with great bliss. The beings dwelling there were also very happy and joyful, with thin layers of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, easy to tame, easy to correct, and easy to purify. World Holder, Bhagavan Jambu River Golden Mountain King was also a Bodhi-
