The Noble World-Holder's Questions, a Mahāyāna Sūtra. The Noble World-Holder's Questions, a Mahāyāna Sūtra. In Sanskrit: Āryanairātmaparipṛcchānāmamahāyānasūtra. In Tibetan: The Noble Question of No-Self, a Mahāyāna Sūtra. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas! Then, those non-Buddhists who held to object-oriented views, possessed of conceptualization and analysis, entered into the Mahāyāna. With respect and folded hands, they fully inquired about the question of no-self: "Son of good family, the All-Knowing One has said that there is no self in the body. If there is truly no self in the body, then how do things like playing, laughing, crying, reveling, anger, pride, jealousy, slander, and so forth arise from it? Does the body truly have a self or not? Please dispel these doubts of ours." The Mahāyānists said, "Friends, regarding the body, neither saying that there truly is a self, nor saying that there is no self, should be asserted here. If one says that there truly is a self, then saying that there is no self is false speech. If it exists, then how is it that when one analyzes all the outer and inner parts of the body, such as hair, nails, skin, head, flesh, bones, legs, fat, tendons, liver, intestines, esophagus, hands, feet, limbs, minor limbs, and so forth, the self does not truly appear?" The non-Buddhists said, "Some who possess divine eyes can see it. We are beings with eyes of flesh, so how can we truly see the self?" The Mahāyānists said, "Even those who possess divine eyes cannot see it. How can that which has no color, no form, and no shape be seen?" The non-Buddhists said, "Does it not exist?" The Mahāyānists said, "If one says that it does not exist, then saying that it exists is false speech. If it does not exist, then how do playing, laughing, crying, and reveling manifestly exist?"

Anger, pride, jealousy, and slander, etc., will all arise. Therefore, it is not right to say that they do not exist. One should not say, "Does it exist or not?" Because these faults exist, one should not say that they exist or do not exist. The non-Buddhists said: Then, what will be the object of focus here? The Mahayanists said: There is nothing that can be an object of focus. The non-Buddhists said: Is it emptiness like the sky? The Mahayanists said: Friends, it is just like that, it is emptiness like the sky. The non-Buddhists said: If that is the case, then how should we view playing, laughing, crying, reveling, anger, pride, jealousy, and slander, etc.? The Mahayanists said: They are just like illusion, dreams, and optical illusions. The non-Buddhists said: What is illusion like? What are dreams and optical illusions like? The Mahayanists said: Illusion is just a symbol. Dreams are just individual appearances, not to be grasped, empty in nature, and not of the nature of existence. Optical illusions are just artificial constructs. Friends, it is just like that, all things should be known to be like illusion, dreams, and optical illusions. Furthermore, conventional truth and ultimate truth should be explained. Among them, what is called conventional truth is the thought that "this is me," "this is other," and the discrimination of life, person, individual, agent, experiencer, wealth, son, wife, friend, relative, etc., is called conventional truth. That which has no self, no other, no life, no person, no individual, no agent, no experiencer, no wealth, no son, no wife, no friend, no relative, etc., is called ultimate truth. That which is completely examined in all things by nature, and the results of good and non-good, birth and cessation, is conventional.

Wow! The results of virtue and non-virtue do not exist, birth does not exist, cessation does not exist, suchness itself, in that there is no pervasive defilement and purification, this is the essence of the practice of the Middle Way teachings. It is said thus: Conventional and ultimate, two distinctions are truly explained. Conventional is the dharma of the world, ultimate is beyond the world. Those who enter the conventional dharma, sentient beings are controlled by afflictions. Because of not fully understanding the ultimate, they will wander in samsara for a long time. In the conventional worldly dharmas, the unwise make distinctions. By that pervasive distinction, they will experience suffering. Like ordinary people, children do not know the path of liberation, so they will experience many endless sufferings. Where there is a cessation of existence, because the true ultimate is not known, there is birth and death, there is coming and going of birth and non-birth. Those who abide in worldly dharmas, fools wander like a wheel. In this suffering-filled samsara, they wander again and again. Like the sun and moon, they come and go again. Likewise, when transferring in existence, they also come and go again. All of samsara is impermanent, unstable, and of the nature of momentary destruction. Therefore, by knowing the ultimate, abandon the place of conventional truth. From the high heavens, the gods and the Gandharvas, gods and humans, all have transference, all are the result of convention. Accomplished ones, vidyadharas, yakshas, Gandharvas, and rakshasas, will again go to hell, all are the result of convention. Those diligent gods, and those who abide in the source of qualities, transferring and falling from heaven, all are the result of convention. Indra, the wheel-turning king, etc., whoever obtains the supreme position, again enters the birth place of animals, all are the result of convention. Therefore, abandoning all the good truths of the gods of heaven, yogis should always meditate on the clear light of bodhicitta. There is no object, and no object of focus, all is emptiness, without a place, elaboration
