Not pure, devoid of anything, possessing perversion, without intrinsic nature, unmade, unoriginated, fully realized as unborn. Thus, when contemplating the Dharma with the twelve links of dependent origination, one does not see the Dharma of dependent origination as past, future, or present. One does not see the characteristics of the Dharma of the twelve links of dependent origination; in dependent origination, there is no cause, no birth, no sign, no manifest action, no origination, no object that is made, and from the beginning, one knows and realizes that all Dharmas are devoid of anything. Thus, having comprehended and realized the twelve links of dependent origination, one does not see that there is anything made or that there is a maker in the twelve links of dependent origination. If all Dharmas arise from a cause, then since there is no cause, that Dharma also does not exist. The Bodhisattva, following the meaning of ignorance, realizes that all Dharmas are without an object of focus. Thus, if one enters into that contemplation, then the very absence of cause is the twelve links of dependent origination, and there is no birth in that. The Bodhisattva realizes that the twelve links of dependent origination arise from what is not true. Following the meaning of ignorance, realizing the twelve links of dependent origination, if the Dharma is without action, then there is also no designation as Dharma; therefore, following the meaning of ignorance, one comprehends and realizes the twelve links of dependent origination. Ignorance is unborn, unmade, unoriginated, without intrinsic nature, without a definite Dharma, without a cause, devoid of anything. At that time, the Bodhisattva does not distinguish between knowledge and ignorance as two, the true characteristic of ignorance is knowledge itself. From the cause of ignorance, all Dharmas are devoid of anything, all Dharmas are without cause, and there is no conceptualization. Therefore, following the meaning of ignorance, one realizes the twelve links of dependent origination. World-Holder Bodhisattvas, great beings, call the twelve links of dependent origination skillful means and wisdom. The Bodhisattva who thus realizes the twelve links of dependent origination together with

If one understands these, it is said that the Bodhisattva has well attained the wisdom of non-arising. Why is that? If one contemplates birth and cessation, one is not skilled in the twelve links of dependent origination. But whoever knows that things gather and separate from many causes, that one is said to have attained the wisdom of non-arising. Whoever attains the wisdom of non-arising is said to understand the twelve links of dependent origination. Therefore, if Bodhisattvas, great beings, wish to understand or realize the wisdom of non-arising, they should diligently apply themselves to the wisdom of the twelve links of dependent origination. Thus, one will understand and realize the unborn nature of the twelve links of dependent origination. O Holder of the World, if a Bodhisattva, a great being, knows non-arising as the twelve links of dependent origination, he will attain the union of the twelve links of dependent origination. Thus, knowing and seeing the three realms in the nature of non-arising, one will quickly attain the forbearance of the Dharma of non-arising. That Bodhisattva will receive a prophecy from this very Buddha who is now dwelling, that in this very place he will attain unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. That Bodhisattva will soon receive a prophecy, and eventually he will also receive a prophecy. O Holder of the World, such great virtue, having received the prophecy, will become a mind of great bliss, and from the union of entrusting and entering into all dharmas, one will attain the light of wisdom. Thus, by understanding the twelve links of dependent origination as unborn, one will serve the Buddhas who are now dwelling. That person will not be overcome by evil demons. He will cross over the stream of birth and cyclic existence and go to dry land. He will be liberated from the mire of ignorance. He will go to a place of great bliss. O Holder of the World, whoever dwells now or has passed away, if one listens to, or believes in, or reads, or recites, or practices yoga with the union of the twelve links of dependent origination, it will not be long

I predict that you will obtain the patience of unborn dharmas. I also predict that, before long, you will be prophesied by the thus-gone ones who are now living to attain the unexcelled, perfect, and complete enlightenment. The fifth chapter: Knowing the Twelve Interdependent Arisings. Holder of the World, how do bodhisattva-mahasattvas become skilled in the four close placements of mindfulness? Bodhisattva-mahasattvas discern and contemplate the four close placements of mindfulness. What are the four? Namely: following the body with contemplation of the body, following feelings with contemplation of feelings, following the mind with contemplation of the mind, and following dharmas with contemplation of dharmas. How does one follow the body with contemplation of the body, and so forth, following feelings, mind, and dharmas with contemplation of feelings, mind, and dharmas? Holder of the World, when bodhisattva-mahasattvas engage in yoga of the body and follow the body with contemplation, they contemplate the characteristics of the body as they truly are. For example: This body is impermanent, suffering, like a disease, like a sore, afflicted by suffering, of the nature of decay, change, and destruction. This body is extremely impure, that is, unlovely, filled with various impurities, with impurities constantly flowing from its nine openings. This body is extremely foul-smelling, like a walking bag of disgusting vomit. Thus, when this body is examined as it truly is, not even a hair's breadth of purity or attractiveness can be found in this body. This body is entirely wrapped and covered with bones, sinews, skin, and flesh, and arises from the maturation of the causes, conditions, and results of previous actions, knowing that it is bound by accumulation and appropriation. What is accumulation? What is appropriation? Because this body arises from previous causes and conditions, it is labeled appropriation. In this present life, washing the body and nourishing it with food, clothing, bedding, and medicine is called accumulation. Thus, the present causes and conditions are called accumulation, and the results of previous lives
