Through diligence, all activities are accomplished, and therefore, there is truly nothing to cling to. These twelve sources are bound by the delusion of past karma, thus accomplishing all activities. World Protector, what is called "source" is the gate through which afflictions arise and increase for those who are ignorant and without wisdom. The eye is the gate of form, for the sake of generating love and hatred. Form is also the gate of the eye, for the sake of generating love and hatred. Similarly, between the ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind, the mind becomes the gate of dharma, thus generating love and hatred. Dharma also becomes the gate of the mind, thus generating love and hatred. Thus, the twelve sources are the gathering and assembly of love and hatred, not understanding the true nature. World Protector, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, because they thoroughly understand the nature of the essence of the sources and the characteristics of the sources, they will not be bound by love and hatred. World Protector, Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas thoroughly understand the sources. The chapter on knowing the twelve sources, this is the fourth chapter. World Protector, how then do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas skillfully distinguish and understand the twelve links of dependent origination? Bodhisattva- Mahasattvas distinguish and understand the twelve links of dependent origination as follows: Because there is nothing, it is called ignorance. Because there is no dharma in ignorance, it is called ignorance. Because ignorance does not understand knowledge, it is called ignorance. If not understanding knowledge is ignorance, then why is it called ignorance? Because there is no definite dharma to cling to in ignorance, it is called ignorance. Why is it said that with ignorance as the condition, there are actions? Because all dharmas are nothing, and ignorant beings separately create actions, it is said that with ignorance as the condition, there are actions. From actions, consciousness arises, so it is said that with actions as the condition, there is consciousness. Name and form are two characteristics, therefore they are of consciousness.

Conditioned by name and form. From name and form arise the six sense sources, therefore the condition of name and form is the six sense sources. From the six sense sources arises contact, therefore the condition of the six sense sources is contact. From contact arises feeling, therefore the condition of contact is feeling. From feeling arises craving, therefore the condition of feeling is craving. From craving arises grasping, therefore the condition of craving is grasping. From grasping arises becoming, therefore the condition of grasping is becoming. From becoming arises birth, therefore the condition of becoming is birth. From birth comes aging, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, and suffering, becoming a mass of pure suffering, therefore the condition of birth is aging, death, mental confusion, lamentation, and the mass of suffering, thus becoming a mass of great suffering. Among these, all that is gathered is wisdom turned upside down, acting contrary to awareness, accumulating the aggregates of ignorance, generating desire for future existence, seeking birth in all places where joy and attachment reside, this is the aggregate of becoming. The world holds, these worlds are bound by the twelve links of dependent origination, blinded by ignorance, embracing the precipice with the darkness of ignorance, proceeding with ignorance as the beginning, thus fully generating the twelve links of dependent origination. Bodhisattvas, when they thoroughly examine the true nature of ignorance in this way, know that ignorance itself is emptiness, without a beginning or end to be found. Why is this? Because ignorance does not exist, therefore there is no so-called beginning or end, therefore the wise ones realize the beginning by the absence of an end, and do not discriminate at the beginning. By completely cutting off all discrimination, one does not cling to ignorance. Because all phenomena are empty and without anything, therefore the Dharma is not as it is said, even if it is said that all phenomena are empty and without anything, that is knowing and seeing ignorance. Whoever understands all phenomena, that is awareness, there is no other awareness besides that, whoever knows awareness and
