It is the gate of mind. Therefore, it is called the source of Dharma. Because of the gate of the source of Dharma, it is said to be the source of mind. In order to show the gate of the nature of mind and to make it known, it is said to be the source of Dharma. The conventional truth is correctly explained, but mind does not depend on Dharma, and Dharma does not depend on mind. Because they arise in dependence on each other, all Dharmas become causes, so it is said to be the source of mind. It is for the sake of arising in dependence on each other and showing the nature of mind. Speaking of the source of Dharma, in the conventional truth, by analogy with the inverted explanation, in the ultimate truth, there is no object of the source of mind. It is said that there is no object of the source of Dharma. Wise people, even if they analyze the sources, do not see them as truly existing. Ordinary people, each with a mind that is inverted, speak of the source of mind and the source of Dharma as two aspects. The source of mind and the source of Dharma are not true, and the Thusness of non-existence is as it is. The Thus-Gone One has realized it, so it is said to be the source. All sources arise in dependence, arising from actions that correspond to inversion, so for it, there is no true object of the source of mind and the source of Dharma. The source of mind and the source of Dharma do not dwell within, do not dwell without, and do not dwell between the two. Furthermore, the source of mind is not past, not future. After knowing the immediate cause of the present, ordinary people, each after thinking, speak of the source of mind and the source of Dharma. Wise people, regarding the source of mind and the source of Dharma, realize that what is not true, non-existent, and arises from inverted conceptualization is not a source, but they realize it as a source. Why is that? Because all sources necessarily lack the nature of a source. Wise people thus realize that all sources are not true and non-existent. The nature of the source of mind and the source of Dharma

is not specified. The characteristic of that one and only entity arising from the mind-sphere and the dharma-sphere is also not specified. Thus, since the mind-sphere and the dharma-sphere arise in dependence, the Tathagata has also declared the characteristics of knowledge and vision of the spheres, which are as follows: the spheres are not real, there is nothing, arising from actions with perversion, dependent on causes and conditions, having made the mind-sphere and the dharma-sphere, doing, not doing, the mind-sphere does not distinguish the dharma-sphere, and the dharma-sphere does not distinguish the mind-sphere. Why is that? Because it is separated from both. Thus, because it is separated from two characteristics, there is no distinction in them. Although those spheres arise in dependence, ordinary people speak according to perverse thoughts. As understood and realized by the noble ones, the mind-sphere is also unborn, unproduced, unceasing, uncoming, ungone. The mind does not know the mind, does not distinguish the mind. The dharma does not know the dharma, does not distinguish the dharma. Because both are empty. Because it is separated from both, the mind does not know the characteristic of the mind, and the dharma does not know the characteristic of the dharma. Because those two characteristics are nothing, there is no definite dharma there. The mind cannot be established, nor can it destroy the mind. The dharma cannot establish the dharma, nor can it destroy the dharma. Because both do not exist, the mind-sphere does not think, "I am the mind-sphere." The dharma-sphere does not think, "I am the dharma-sphere." Because those two are empty, they are like illusions, distinguished and established in names and words. Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas thus distinguish and understand the mind-sphere and the dharma-sphere. World Holder, how do Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas distinguish and understand the six inner spheres and the six outer spheres? It is like this:

The twelve sources are all unreal, arising from many causes and inversions. Because they become two aspects, there are inner and outer. Ordinary people who have not heard the true Dharma, not knowing the truth of the twelve sources, become attached to the eye source, clinging to "my eye source" and "the eye source of myself." They become attached to the form source, clinging to "my form source" and "the form source of myself." From the ear, sound, nose, smell, tongue, taste, body, touch, mind, and dharma, they cling to "my mind," "the mind of myself," "my dharma," and "the dharma of myself." Because of such attachment, they are completely bound by the twelve sources, revolving again and again in the five paths, not knowing the path of liberation. Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, when they truly contemplate the twelve sources in this way, see that the twelve sources are all unreal, like illusions, without essence, like chaff, like emptiness, like magic. They do not cling to "I" or "mine" in the eye source, and so on up to the dharma source, they do not cling to "I" or "mine." Because they do not cling in this way, they do not discriminate. Bodhisattvas are thus very skilled in the twelve sources. World Holder Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas, being skilled in the means of these sources, are not attached to or obstructed by all the twelve sources. They are also able to understand the sources to be known and seen, and they are skilled in distinguishing the sources. Therefore, they comprehend and realize the twelve dharma sources that arise from many causes, and because there is no sign, the signs of the twelve sources are also destroyed. They do not abide in the path that relies on the sources, they know that the sources have no self-nature, and they also know and understand all the means of combining the signs. World Holder, it is like a magical wheel made by a magician, from which water flows from the four directions; the twelve sources are also likewise interdependent, both internal and external.
