Showing the seeing of trees. (Showing) all realms are without letters, without accumulation, unspeakable, (showing) the means and wisdom of all realms, (showing) entering into dependent origination. (Showing) Furthermore, speaking of the very nature of all dharmas, such as the world and what transcends the world, conditioned and unconditioned, independent and not independent, entering into conduct, the ultimate truth and the conventional truth, sutras of definitive meaning and sutras of provisional meaning, and the profound sutra of liberation through dependent origination, one should diligently strive to speak of everything from these sutras. The chapter called the Eighteen Realms, this is the third chapter. The Sutra of Holding the World, the third volume. The Blessed One spoke these words to Holding the World. Then, how is it that a Bodhisattva Mahasattva is skilled in the twelve sources? When Bodhisattva Mahasattvas discern and correctly understand the twelve sources, they think thus: For the eye, there is no specific place for the eye source. For the eye, there is no certainty of the eye source. The eye source is also not a specific thing. Why is that? Because the eye source is born from many causes and conditions, it arises from perversion. Because it is focused on form, it relies on form. From the meeting of the two, due to the cause of form, the cause of the eye source exists. Because the two, form and eye source, are interdependent, it is said to be the form of the eye. For example, what is called eye and form, form is the door through which the eye source arises, and the eye is also the cause of the form source arising and appearing, therefore, the source is also named as the door of the source due to the cause of form, so it is called the eye source. Because the eye sees, it is called the form source. Although it is said to exist conventionally, the eye does not dwell in form, nor does form dwell in the eye, the eye does not dwell in the eye, nor does form dwell in form. Because the attachment to form arises from many causes and conditions, it is named the eye source. Furthermore, dependent origination...

Because of the arising of eye consciousness and the nature of seeing, it is called the sphere of form. How does the conventional, reversed explanation show that in reality, the sphere of the eye and the sphere of form are both unobtainable? Wise people do not see the spheres as truly existing even when they search for them; but ordinary people with reversed minds explain the sphere of the eye and the sphere of form as two characteristics. The sphere of the eye and the sphere of form themselves show that they are not true spheres. In order to know the true nature of things as they are, the spheres arise from dependent origination and from actions that have reversed appearances, so they are not truly obtainable in the nature of the spheres. Why is that? The sphere of the eye and the sphere of form do not exist within, do not exist outside, and do not exist between the two. The sphere of the eye and the sphere of form are not past, not future, and not present; however, because it is known as form from the combination of present causes and conditions, it is said to be the sphere of the eye, just like the behavior of ordinary people. Wise people understand that the spheres are not true, are nothing, and arise from reversed discriminations, so they see and know non-spheres as spheres. The nature of the spheres is unspeakable, and there is no definite nature to the spheres. The Tathagata spoke of dependent origination. These are called seeing and knowing as spheres. For example, the spheres are not true, are nothing, depend on causes and conditions, and arise from actions that have reversal. The spheres are unmade and have no maker; the sphere of the eye does not discriminate from the sphere of form, and the sphere of form does not know or discriminate from the sphere of the eye, because it is separated from the characteristics of both, so in terms of the nature related to Dharma, it is impossible to discriminate and speak about it.

The nature of the aggregates is interdependent origination, understood in a reversed way by ordinary people, just as it is comprehended and realized by the noble ones. The eye-sphere and the form-sphere are of the nature of being unborn, unceasing, not coming, and not going. Therefore, the eye does not know the eye, the eye does not discriminate in the eye. Form does not know form, form does not discriminate in form. Why is that? Because both are empty. Because both are separate, the eye does not know the nature of the eye, and form does not know the nature of form. Both the eye and form have no nature, no dharma, because there is no definite nature in that. Therefore, the eye does not make the eye, and the eye does not know the eye. Form does not make form, and form does not know form. Because both do not exist, the eye does not think, "I am the eye," and form does not think, "I am the form." The self-nature of the eye and form is the nature of illusion. In the unreal designation, it is called eye and form. Bodhisattvas, just as they discriminate and think about the eye-sphere and the form-sphere, so too are the ear and sound, nose and smell, tongue and taste, body and touch. World Holder, how do Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas discriminate and think about the mind-sphere? When Bodhisattvas Mahasattvas discriminate and think about the mind-sphere, they think like this: the mind-sphere has no object, and the mind has no definite nature as a sphere. They think that there is no entity in the mind-sphere. Why is that? Because the mind-sphere is interdependent origination, born from reversal, and depends on the dharma-sphere, so when the two meet, they become without function. The mind-sphere also arises from the causes and conditions of the dharma-sphere, and it also discriminates from the causes and conditions of the dharma-sphere, dividing into two natures. Relying on the mind, the place of the dharma-sphere exists. The mind is the door that gives rise to and increases dharma, and the dharma-sphere also
