One takes in places. One takes in the five aggregates. One takes in the eighteen realms. One takes in the twelve causes and conditions, therefore it is called taking. Where is it established as Dharma? Taking in desires, internal or external, taking in existence, taking in seeing, hearing, feeling, and knowing. Taking between self and what belongs to self. World-holder, ordinary people do not know or see this taking, which is not true. They take in Dharma through the causes and conditions of inversion. That person is bound by taking, and due to the condition of ignorance, takes in formations. Due to the condition of formations, one takes in consciousness. Due to the condition of consciousness, one takes in name and form. Beings are attached to and cling to the gross characteristics of name and form, and thus take them in. For example: taking form, being with form, being bound by form. Furthermore, one takes in the four formless aggregates, namely, feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, and discriminates and names them. World-holder, if there were no Buddha, beings would be without knowledge or vision, and would not be able to truly understand the five aggregates of taking as they are. After the Buddha, the Bhagavan, descended into the world, he destroyed the reliance and dwelling of beings on form, destroyed the reliance and dwelling on feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness, and in order to destroy the characteristic of aggregation, the Buddha, the Bhagavan, thus separated and taught. What you rely on and dwell in is form. That form is the combination of the four great elements. Feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness are merely names. In order to accomplish the characteristics of name and form, the five aggregates of taking are explained. You ordinary people should not dwell on or be attached to these impermanent and insubstantial five aggregates of taking. World-holder, why did the Tathagata explain the aggregates of taking? World-holder, ordinary people are born from inversion, and are bound by the net of ignorance, therefore they wander in samsara.

Why do we wander in samsara? It is because of attachment and clinging to the characteristics of the five aggregates of appropriation. Thinking, "I will be happy dwelling here," that person clings to the characteristic of happiness, and therefore is attached to and dwells in the five aggregates of appropriation. By clinging to the characteristic of suffering, and the characteristic of neither suffering nor happiness, one dwells in and is attached to the five aggregates of appropriation. The place of reliance for ordinary beings is the five aggregates of appropriation. Worldly ordinary beings are born and then become deluded, not knowing what the five aggregates are, nor knowing where the five aggregates come from. Because they do not know the true nature of the five aggregates, they are attached to and cling to the aggregates, and therefore they are called the aggregates of appropriation. There is no taker, nor is there an object to be taken, because they are bound by clinging to what is inverted and by universally discriminating what is not true. Blinded by ignorance and delusion, there is self-grasping, grasping in between self, and grasping in between self and others, therefore it is called the aggregates of appropriation. There is no appropriation in the five aggregates, nor is there a definite characteristic. Therefore, the wise know that what is not the aggregates is the five aggregates of appropriation. They know the five aggregates of appropriation in the inverted aggregates. They know the five aggregates of appropriation in the aggregates of ignorance. Ordinary beings are bound by this, and therefore are attached to and dwell in the five aggregates of appropriation. Because they are attached to and dwell in them, they do not know what appropriation is, nor what the aggregates of appropriation are. Because they are attached to and dwell in the five aggregates, they are born and wander in samsara. Because they are attached to and dwell in the five aggregates, the continuum wanders universally. What do they dwell in and cling to? They dwell in and cling to seeing, they dwell in and cling to hearing, they dwell in and cling to feeling, they dwell in and cling to discriminating, they dwell in and cling to existence, and they dwell in and cling to ignorance. Ordinary beings are bound by the bonds of existence, and are manifestly attached to the five aggregates of appropriation, completely obscured by obscurations, deluded by ignorance, and therefore do not know or feel. What is the place of our attachment? Because we do not know what binds us, we...
