Because of realizing the characteristic of impermanence, one does not cling to or dwell on the past aggregate of consciousness. One knows that what is not an aggregate is the aggregate of consciousness. One also does not cling to or dwell on the future aggregate of consciousness. One knows that what is not an aggregate is the aggregate of consciousness. One also does not abide in the present consciousness. One knows the characteristic of impermanence of the aggregate of consciousness as it truly is. One knows the characteristic of arising and ceasing of the aggregate of consciousness as it truly is. If one attends to it in that way and also truly knows that aggregate of consciousness, then contemplation is called entering the path of truth. That is, one knows consciousness as it truly is. One knows the arising of consciousness as it truly is. One knows the cessation of consciousness as it truly is. One knows the path to the cessation of consciousness as it truly is. When that person truly understands the characteristics of the arising and cessation of the aggregate of consciousness, he becomes skilled in establishing the aggregate of consciousness and skilled in completely cutting off all signs. He knows the characteristics of the arising and cessation of the aggregate of consciousness, and he realizes the characteristics of the arising and cessation of the aggregate of consciousness. At that time, that Bodhisattva does not generate the aggregate of consciousness, nor does he stop the aggregate of consciousness, but realizes that the aggregate of consciousness has not arisen from the beginning. When he realizes in that way, he does not perceive consciousness as having the characteristic of cessation, but understands the aggregate of consciousness as having the characteristic of non-arising. Why is that? Holder of the World, the aggregate of consciousness has no birth, no sign, and no establishment. The characteristic of the arising of the aggregate of consciousness is not true, so it is included in the characteristic of non-arising. Holder of the World, the aggregate of consciousness has no characteristic of arising and establishment. The characteristic of the aggregate of consciousness arises from many causes and conditions. Holder of the World, that is how the Bodhisattva Mahasattva is.

When contemplating the Dharma of dependent origination in this way, one realizes that what is not a skandha is the skandha of consciousness. By discriminating and examining with faith, all examinations of consciousness are thoroughly understood and realized as they truly are. Bodhisattvas, having understood the solitude of the skandha of consciousness, completely destroy all objects of focus and all that is to be known. The Bodhisattva Mahasattva, Holder of the World, thus understands the skandha of consciousness. If one knows that the skandha of consciousness is unborn, unmade, unarisen, ungraspable, and unseizable, then one knows that these also arise from many causes and exist from the aggregation of many causes. They exist due to the causes of the Dharma of seeing, hearing, sensing, and knowing, and from the very beginning, they are empty. Thus, when contemplating the skandha of consciousness, one knows that the skandha of consciousness is unmade and unborn, and one does not cling to or become attached to a master. The Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, Holder of the World, thus contemplate the discrimination and entering into the skandha of consciousness as it truly is. If a Bodhisattva thus skillfully enters into the five skandhas, and thus skillfully contemplates the five aggregates of clinging as they truly are, then this Bodhisattva is said to be extremely knowledgeable in entering the arising, ceasing, and path of the five skandhas. By completely cutting off the perception of characteristics in the skandhas, one knows the means of the five skandhas as they truly are. By that means, one does not become attached to, grasp, or be infatuated with the five aggregates of clinging, nor will one become bound by them. One knows form as it truly is, and one knows the characteristic of impermanence of form as it truly is. Thus, if a Bodhisattva develops attachment to form, he immediately eliminates and cuts it off. Similarly, one knows feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness as they truly are, and one also knows the characteristic of impermanence of feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness as they truly are. If feeling, perception, volition, and consciousness
