Ah, thus it is done. The Bodhisattva Always Joyful and Laughing Power asked: Blessed One, which Bodhisattva always laughs, and with the power of extreme joy fulfills my intention, has done what should be done, has done what is to be done, therefore he is called a Bodhisattva. Sister Destroyer of Doubt asked: Blessed One, which Bodhisattva has no doubt about all dharmas, and has no uncertainty, therefore he is called a Bodhisattva. Young Woman Lion asked: Blessed One, who has neither the dharma of women nor the dharma of men, but shows various forms in order to ripen all sentient beings, therefore he is called a Bodhisattva. Daughter Jewel asked: Blessed One, which Bodhisattva does not rejoice in other jewels except for the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha jewels, therefore he is called a Bodhisattva. and rejoices with the three dharmas, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. Brahma Subhuti asked: World Honored One, which Bodhisattva appears to have no dharma that is not the dharma of the Buddha, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. Bodhisattva Maitreya asked: World Honored One, which Bodhisattva, upon being seen, immediately causes sentient beings to attain the samadhi of loving-kindness, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. Manjushri, who has become a youth, asked: World Honored One, which Bodhisattva, while teaching all dharmas, does not conceive of them as dharmas, nor does he conceive of them as non-dharmas, nor does he conceive of them as self, nor does he conceive of them as other, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. Bodhisattva Net Light asked: World Honored One, which Bodhisattva's light completely pacifies all the afflictions of sentient beings, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. Bodhisattva Samantabhadra asked: World Honored One, which Bodhisattva, in the ten directions of the world, sees all the Buddha lands of the Tathagatas as if flowers are blooming, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. In this way, those Bodhisattvas each stated their own merits. Then, the World Honored One spoke to the Brahmin's son, who was abiding in equanimity like a great Sal tree: Which Bodhisattva is delighted to liberate all suffering sentient beings, and also gives all roots of virtue to all sentient beings, therefore it is called a Bodhisattva. Then, Brahma Subhuti said this to Manjushri, who had become a youth: Noble son, in what kind of dwelling do you abide? He replied: In whatever dwelling all sentient beings included in all compounded things abide. He asked: In whatever dwelling all sentient beings included in all compounded things abide, by what dwelling does one abide? He replied: By whatever dwelling all the Tathagatas abide. He asked: The Tathagatas

By what does one abide in all abodes? He said: By abiding in the emptiness of ultimate truth. He said: If, son of good family, by abiding in whatever abode all individual beings abide, they also cause all the Tathagatas to abide, then what is the distinction of the Tathagatas? He said: Brahma, do you think that emptiness has any distinction? He said: Manjushri, it is not so. Manjushri said: Did the Blessed One not say that all dharmas are empty? He said: Yes, it is so. Manjushri said: Brahma, therefore all dharmas are without distinction, and their abiding is also of that nature. Brahma, the Tathagata does not cling to different dharmas. He said: Manjushri, what is the abiding called 'abiding'? He said: Brahma, that which has the four abodes of Brahma is called 'abode'. Whoever, Brahma, is separated from the four abodes of Brahma does not abide in the abode. Those who abide in the abode, having perfected the four abodes of Brahma, abide, they are the ones who abide in the abode. Brahma, even if one abides in a solitary place or a place without concealment, but is separated from the four abodes of Brahma, then he does not abide in the abode, and is not skilled in abiding. He said: If one abides in a place on the top of a multi-storied building, on a golden throne with cushions and coverings, but possesses the four abodes of Brahma, then they abide in the abode and are skilled in abiding. He said: By abiding in what does one see wisdom? He said: By abiding in what does one purify the sight of self? He said: Manjushri, is seeing the self the same as seeing wisdom? He said: Brahma, it is so. Seeing the self is seeing wisdom. Brahma, it is like this: a person skilled in looking at gold is certain to know how to look at good gold by knowing how to look at bad gold. Similarly, by seeing the self, one purifies the sight of wisdom. He said: Manjushri, what is seeing the self? He said: That which is the nature of no-self. Brahma, the self is extremely non-existent, whatever is unestablished, thus becoming one, that is called seeing the self. He said: Manjushri, as you have said, knowing the meaning, seeing the self is seeing the Buddha. Why is that? Because the self-nature of the self is the Buddha.
