Thus it is said. Said: Son of good family, when a Bodhisattva fully knows that all entering into concentration is not entering into concentration, and fully knows that all dharmas are not dharmas, and all sentient beings are not sentient beings, thus, son of good family, a Bodhisattva is said to have entered into Bodhi. Then, the Brahmin, like the son of a great Sala tree, being equally abiding, said this to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, how is a Bodhisattva called a Bodhisattva? The Bhagavan replied: Son of good family, when a Bodhisattva generates compassion for sentient beings who are destined to fall, and does not generate special respect for sentient beings who are destined for liberation, this is just a name, called Bodhisattva. Why is that? Son of good family, a Bodhisattva does not make aspirations for Bodhi for sentient beings who are destined and not destined, but rather makes aspirations for Bodhi for sentient beings who are destined to fall, therefore he is called Bodhisattva. Therefore, son of good family, a Bodhisattva generates compassion for sentient beings who are destined to fall, and then makes aspirations for Bodhi, therefore he is called Bodhisattva. Then, a Bodhisattva named Bodhi said this to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, for what reason is a Bodhisattva called, I also want to speak. The Bhagavan replied: Bodhi, you speak. Bodhi reported: Bhagavan, for example, if a man or woman abides in the eight-limbed Uposatha that is not broken or damaged, then he/she is counted as having perfectly taken the eight-limbed Uposatha. Bhagavan, similarly, from the time a Bodhisattva generates the first mind, until the heartwood of Bodhi, he does not waver from the mind of Bodhi, therefore he is called Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva with steadfast intelligence reported: Bhagavan, with what kind of superior intention does a Bodhisattva steadfastly possess loving-kindness that does not focus on sentient beings?

Yes. That is why it is called a Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva Liberating Sentient Beings asked: Blessed One, just as a boat or a bridge does not tire or discriminate in carrying sentient beings across, similarly, Blessed One, whichever Bodhisattva has such a mind for the sake of liberating all sentient beings, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva Saving from the Lower Realms asked: Blessed One, whichever Bodhisattva, in whichever Buddha-field, as soon as they place their foot, all the lower realms will be completely pacified, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara asked: Blessed One, whichever Bodhisattva, merely seeing them will certainly lead sentient beings to enlightenment, and hearing their name will also completely liberate them from all fears, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva Mahāsthāmaprāpta asked: Blessed One, whichever Bodhisattva, when they take a step and walk, all the realms of demons in the three-thousand great-thousand world realm will be completely shaken, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva Never Weary asked: Blessed One, if as many kalpas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River become one day and night, and counting those days and nights in that way, fifteen days is half a month, thirty days is one month, and twelve months is one year, and for hundreds of thousands of millions of years, one Buddha appears and pleases them, and in this way, in as many Buddha-fields as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, they practice pure conduct, and even after being prophesied, they are never weary, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva Good Leader asked: Blessed One, whichever Bodhisattva, for sentient beings who have entered the wrong path, generates great compassion in order to place those who have entered the wrong path on the good path, and does not expect any reward for that, that is why it is called a Bodhisattva. The Bodhisattva Great Mount Meru asked: Blessed One,

At that time, that Bodhisattva who considers all dharmas to be equal to Mount Sumeru and thoroughly understands them without any discrimination is called a Bodhisattva for that reason.
