谨启禀。世尊，菩萨能忍受退怯。世尊，菩萨如何完全退怯呢？如何才能完全不退怯呢？世尊开示说：人非人主，菩萨具有四法就会完全退怯。四法是什么呢？即是：如果听到众生界是无量的就感到害怕；听到轮回是无量的就感到害怕；听到佛的智慧是无量的就感到害怕；听到以无量的福德成就妙相和好就感到害怕。人非人主，菩萨如果具有这四法，就应知是完全退怯。人非人主，菩萨具有四法，应知是完全不退怯。四法是什么呢？即是：听到无量的众生界，我也要使他们完全脱离痛苦，不感到害怕；为了成办善根，听到要完全摄取无量的轮回，不感到害怕；听到无量的一切智智，我也要使它完全圆满，不感到害怕；听到积聚无量的福德能成就妙相和好，我也要成办，不感到害怕。人非人主，菩萨如果具有这四法，就应知是完全不退怯。人非人主，此外菩萨具有四法，应知是完全退怯。四法是什么呢？即是：时时希望声闻乘；时时希望独觉乘；在正法坏灭时，舍弃而不受持；以及不让其他众生如实地受持圆满菩提。人非人主，菩萨如果具有这四法，就应知是完全退怯。人非人主，此外菩萨具有四法，应知是完全不退怯。四法是什么呢？即是：即使极其窘迫也不舍弃菩提心；不耽著于声闻和独觉的果位；身体和生命

I respectfully report. World Honored One, Bodhisattvas can endure discouragement. World Honored One, how does a Bodhisattva become completely discouraged? How can one be completely undiscouraged? The World Honored One said: Lord of non-humans, a Bodhisattva who possesses four qualities will become completely discouraged. What are the four? They are: if one hears that the realm of sentient beings is immeasurable, one becomes afraid; if one hears that samsara is immeasurable, one becomes afraid; if one hears that the wisdom of the Buddha is immeasurable, one becomes afraid; and if one hears that excellent marks and signs are accomplished by immeasurable merit, one becomes afraid. Lord of non-humans, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, it should be known that they are completely discouraged. Lord of non-humans, a Bodhisattva who possesses four qualities should be known to be completely undiscouraged. What are the four? They are: hearing that the immeasurable realm of sentient beings, I will completely liberate them from suffering, one does not become afraid; in order to accomplish the roots of virtue, hearing that one must completely take up immeasurable samsara, one does not become afraid; hearing that the immeasurable omniscient wisdom, I will completely perfect it, one does not become afraid; hearing that accumulating immeasurable merit can accomplish excellent marks and signs, I will also accomplish it, one does not become afraid. Lord of non-humans, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, it should be known that they are completely undiscouraged. Lord of non-humans, furthermore, a Bodhisattva who possesses four qualities should be known to be completely discouraged. What are the four? They are: sometimes hoping for the Hearer Vehicle; sometimes hoping for the Solitary Buddha Vehicle; when the sacred Dharma is destroyed, abandoning it and not upholding it; and not allowing other beings to truly uphold perfect Bodhi. Lord of non-humans, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, it should be known that they are completely discouraged. Lord of non-humans, furthermore, a Bodhisattva who possesses four qualities should be known to be completely undiscouraged. What are the four? They are: even if extremely distressed, one does not abandon the mind of Bodhi; one is not attached to the grounds of Hearers and Solitary Buddhas; body and life

Abandoning laziness and protecting the sacred Dharma, traveling thousands of yojanas and causing others to attain perfect Bodhi. Lord of the Non-Humans, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, know that they will not regress. Lord of the Non-Humans, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, know that they will regress. What are the four? They are: becoming weary upon seeing beggars; abiding diligently in the practice of alms-gathering; not being diligent in seeking extensive learning; and not teaching the Dharma they have heard to others. Lord of the Non-Humans, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, know that they will regress. Lord of the Non-Humans, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, know that they will not regress. What are the four? They are: regarding beggars as spiritual friends, having no hateful thoughts, smiling and without anger, speaking words such as "Come in, welcome"; not being attached to one's own happiness, but extensively giving happiness to all sentient beings; never being satisfied with seeking extensive learning; and extensively teaching the Dharma they have heard to others, teaching that Dharma to others with a pure mind. Lord of the Non-Humans, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, know that they will not regress. Lord of the Non-Humans, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, know that they will regress. What are the four? They are: not seeking the path of the Perfection of Giving, not engaging in the objects of gathering, not striving to ripen sentient beings, being content with only a small amount of merit, and not seeking higher. Lord of the Non-Humans, if a Bodhisattva possesses these four qualities, know that they will regress. Lord of the Non-Humans, furthermore, if a Bodhisattva possesses four qualities, know that they will not regress. What are the four? They are: seeking the path of the perfections as if one's head were on fire, always striving in the objects of gathering, ripening sentient beings
