This is the Dharma nature of all Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, that when (the Blessed One) smiles, various colors of light radiate from the face of the Blessed One, such as: blue, yellow, red, white, magenta, crystal, and silver colors. These lights pervade the boundless and limitless world with light, even appearing in the Brahma world, making the light of the sun and moon dim. Then, the light returns, circling the Blessed One three times, and disappears into the crown of the Blessed One's head. Then, the venerable Ananda rose from his seat, draped his robe over one shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with reverence and respect, facing the direction where the Blessed One was, folded his palms and, in the form of verses, asked the Blessed One the reason for his smile: Why does the Sugata show a smile? I ask you, whose face is like the spotless moon. I ask you, who possesses spotless glory. I ask you, who is like the color of gold. Why does the Sugata show a smile? I ask you, who delights in generosity and taming. I ask you, whose discipline is completely pure. I ask you, who possesses the power of patience and bestows strength. Why does the Sugata show a smile? I ask you, who possesses the power of diligence and might. I ask you, who delights in meditation and clairvoyance. I ask you, whose wisdom is equal to the sky. Why does the Sugata show a smile? I ask you, who always has a loving heart. I ask you, who is always full of compassion. I ask you, who delights in joy and equanimity.
