If one possesses the two roots, one should know that they are skilled in means. What are the thirty-two? They are as follows: Bodhisattvas do not exhaust themselves, but look upon sentient beings; in order to fully ripen all sentient beings, they abide in great merit; in order to be a place of giving for all sentient beings, they do not seek a place of giving; in order to fully ripen poor sentient beings, they do not seek great benefits; in order to engage all sentient beings in restraining speech, they appear as mutes and stammerers; in order to fully ripen women and girls, they fully embrace women; in order to fully ripen boys, they appear in the form of boys; in order to be in accordance with the ripening of sentient beings, they show all forms; in order to fully ripen intoxicated sentient beings, even if they are not intoxicated, they appear in an intoxicated body; in order to teach the Dharma to those sentient beings who have faith in this, they appear in the form of madmen and those with distracted minds; in order to fully ripen sentient beings, they abandon the heap of morality accumulated for a hundred years; in order to lead them into the Dharma, they bring joy to sentient beings, play with all, show enjoyment, and in order to fully ripen sentient beings who have faith in this, they appear in a body that lives by deceit and cruelty; for women who have become the wives of merchants, householders, and kings, who have no sons, desire sons, are afflicted with the arrow of sorrow, and experience painful feelings, then the Bodhisattva has faith in their virtue, and in order to fully ripen them, they promise to be their son; in order to give food, drink, and wealth to poor sentient beings who have gone to remote monasteries, and to distribute fields, they become caravan leaders among many guests; placing great treasures before them, giving great heaps of wealth, and then teaching the Dharma; removing the arrows of sorrow from sentient beings who are afflicted with the arrows of sorrow, and teaching the Dharma through miraculous powers; in order to enable sentient beings who have lost treasures to live purely, they reveal great treasures before them, and then teach the Dharma. These are Buddhas.
