The greatness of the precepts of the past Bodhisattva Akashagarbha, the greatness of Samadhi, the greatness of Abhijna, the greatness of Jnana, the greatness of Prajna, the greatness of fulfilling aspirations, the greatness of skillful means, the greatness of higher intention, the greatness of Dharma's dominion, the greatness of bodily adornment, the greatness of the adornment of speech and mind, and the greatness of having dominion over all Dharmas, are truly wonderful! Like this, the one called Bodhisattva Akashagarbha, having practiced diligently in the past, therefore, body, speech, and mind can demonstrate everything without effort. World Honored One, who would not cherish the roots of virtue from the past? World Honored One, the lion's roar that Bodhisattva Akashagarbha is now uttering is in accordance with the causes and conditions of the profound conduct of the past. The World Honored One said: It is so, indeed. Just as Brahma has said, the unsurpassed, perfectly complete enlightenment of the Bodhisattvas arises from the roots of virtue, merit, and wisdom of the past. Then, Brahma Light Array addressed the World Honored One, saying: World Honored One, what are the roots of virtue of the Bodhisattvas? What is merit? What is wisdom? The World Honored One said: Brahma, the so-called root of virtue is the initial generation of the mind, which is the root of all the Buddha's teachings. The so-called merit is that immediately after generating the Bodhi mind, all the objects of merit arising from the giving of all sentient beings, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas, as well as those arising from precepts and those arising from meditation, are all overwhelmed. The so-called wisdom is the dedication of the accumulated roots of virtue to the omniscient state. Furthermore, the root of virtue is the intention that is free from deceit and deception. Merit is the diligent practice for the sake of including all merits. Wisdom is the higher intention for the sake of being extraordinary. Furthermore, the root of virtue is having firm faith in virtuous Dharmas. Merit is not being satisfied with the accumulation of virtuous roots. Wisdom is
