I wondered what was happening and became an object of observation. Akashagarbha said: Son of good family, what do you think? Where does the sound of the drum come from? He replied: Son of good family, the sound of the drum arises from the manifestation of the sound on the other side. He asked: Son of good family, does the drum have a body? Does it have a mind? Does it have a form? Does it have a color? Does it have a shape? He replied: Son of good family, it does not. He asked: Son of good family, it is just so. Just as the drum is not completely formed, yet sound can be heard, so too, the sky is not completely formed, yet sound can be heard. He asked: Son of good family, who hears this sound? Where does this sound come from? He replied: Son of good family, the individual discernment of wisdom is inconceivable. Whatever I think in my mind arises from this space, but the mind does not go there, nor does it come here, yet the image of the sound arises. Son of good family, see how profound dependent origination is! From the cause arises the effect, but the cause does not transfer to the formation of the effect. Without a cause, there is no effect. For example, the dharma that manifests from cause and condition, both of these are without movement and without action. Those who have such understanding are detached. Why is that? The Bhagavan has also said that whatever is completely defiled by afflictions, that very knowledge itself is its purified state. Purification is not achieved by eliminating afflictions, but the very characteristic of the nature of afflictions is purification. For example, the terms "affliction" and "purification" are just names. In the ultimate sense, neither affliction nor purification can be designated. The ultimate meaning is not an end, and whatever is not an end is the true end. Whatever is the true end is the end of emptiness. Whatever is the end of emptiness is the end of self. Whatever is the end of self is the end of all dharmas. Why is that? Because all dharmas are its end, the end of emptiness, the end of nirvana, and whoever does not cling to the gate of these three ends

Thus, the wisdom of non-attachment to all dharmas is attained. Then, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Bodhisattva Spectator: 'Son of good family, who gave you the name Spectator?' He replied: 'Venerable Shariputra, wherever you have desire and diligence for the Dharma, will you not become a spectator there?' He replied: 'Son of good family, it is so.' He replied: 'Venerable Shariputra, similarly, I have desire and diligence for all dharmas, and therefore I often think when will I perfect all the Buddha's dharmas, and I am filled with the mind of a spectator. Therefore, I am called Spectator. I have become a spectator of all the actions of a Bodhisattva. I have become a spectator of understanding the minds and actions of all sentient beings. Therefore, I am called Spectator. There is no wisdom in which I cannot become a spectator, and there is no entry in which I cannot become a spectator, therefore I am called Spectator. Wherever I have become a spectator, there is no opportunity for all afflictions and all demonic actions, therefore I am called Spectator.' Then, the Venerable Shariputra said to the Blessed One: 'Blessed One, from the name of this noble man alone, all the Buddha's dharmas are fully expressed. Although all the Buddha's dharmas are taught, there is no attachment to anything. It is wonderful to teach all the Buddha's dharmas without attachment!' Then, in that same assembly, a Bodhisattva named Jewel Glory gathered and sat there, and he said to the Bodhisattva Akashagarbha: 'Son of good family, starting from your excellent exposition of samadhi, please speak boldly about how to practice samadhi.' After saying this, the Bodhisattva Akashagarbha said to the Bodhisattva Jewel Glory: 'Son of good family, there is a samadhi of Bodhisattvas called pure thought that goes unimpeded to the essence of enlightenment.' 'Son of good family, there is a samadhi of Bodhisattvas called the light of no anger towards all sentient beings.'
