Completely giving away everything is the activity of wisdom. Remembering morality is the root of wisdom. Knowing that morality is without action is the activity of wisdom. Remembering the gods is the root of wisdom. The nature of complete purity is the activity of wisdom. Conceptualizing what is heard is the root of wisdom. Conceptualizing all the worlds is the activity of wisdom. Doing what has not been done is the root of wisdom. Knowing that the ripening of karma does not exist is the activity of wisdom. Having no pride is the root of wisdom. Attaining great wisdom is the activity of wisdom. One's own benefit is the root of wisdom. The benefit of both is the activity of wisdom. Holding all eighty-four thousand collections of teachings is the root of wisdom. Completely knowing the eighty-four thousand collections of teachings is the activity of wisdom. Knowing how to teach the Dharma is the root of wisdom. Teaching the Dharma that has results is the activity of wisdom. Causing sentient beings to hold perfect enlightenment is the root of wisdom. Establishing sentient beings on the irreversible ground through the perfection of wisdom and skillful means is the activity of wisdom. Fearing all births in samsara is the root of wisdom. Taking birth intentionally is the activity of wisdom. The patience that follows sound is the root of wisdom. The patience that arises from meditation is the activity of wisdom. Knowing cessation is the root of wisdom. Knowing non-arising is the activity of wisdom. The patience that accords is the root of wisdom. Patience in the Dharma of non-arising is the activity of wisdom. The irreversible ground is the root of wisdom. The ground of empowerment is the activity of wisdom. Sitting at the Bodhi tree is the root of wisdom. Whatever is to be known, whatever is to be heard, whatever is to be realized, and whatever is to be fully awakened to, all of that, with the wisdom that is in accord with a single instant of mind, fully awakens to unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Innumerable, immeasurable ones all trembled in six ways. The surrounding jeweled cloisters also trembled in six ways. Then, the Bodhisattva Heap of Wisdom addressed the Blessed One thus: Blessed One, by what cause and condition did these countless, immeasurable Buddha-fields of the ten directions tremble so violently, and this surrounding cloister situated in the sky also tremble in six ways? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, this is the root of wisdom, and this is the category of Dharma that teaches about karma. In the past, when the Tathāgatas of the past had previously spoken about it, son of good family, you yourself should have asked those Tathāgatas in this very expanse of space, and inquired about the cause and condition of the great earth shaking and appearing in the world. The cause is this, and the condition is this. Then, the Bodhisattva Possessing Eloquence with Individual Perfect Knowledge addressed the Blessed One thus: Blessed One, why is the Bodhisattva Heap of Wisdom called Heap of Wisdom? The Blessed One replied: Son of good family, in the past, in the age of Immaculate Aeon, in the world-realm of Auspicious Arising, there appeared in the world a Tathāgata named Glorious Hidden One, a Buddha, a Blessed One. The sentient beings of that world-realm of Auspicious Arising dwelt in contentment and happiness. The Saṃgha of Bodhisattvas of that Tathāgata Glorious Hidden One consisted of forty-two thousand Bodhisattvas. The Saṃgha of Śrāvakas consisted of eighty-four thousand Śrāvakas. Son of good family, in that way, that Blessed One, that Tathāgata Glorious Hidden One, having taken up the great eloquence of those Bodhisattvas, specially made a hundred koṭis of questions, and spoke to those Bodhisattvas, saying: Noble beings, which of you, for how long, is willing to answer each of these hundred koṭis of questions with a hundred koṭis of teachings?
