It is the same. As are the dharmas, so are the sentient beings. As are the sentient beings, so are the fields. As are the fields, so is nirvana. Therefore, all dharmas are said to be equal to nirvana, because they are ultimate and thorough, without an antidote. Because there is no antidote, all dharmas are pure from the beginning, stainless from the beginning, and without afflictions from the beginning. Therefore, the Tathagata, in accordance with such a nature, manifestly and completely awakens to all dharmas, and having observed the realm of sentient beings that is impure, not stainless, and afflicted, enters into the great compassion called "universal play" for all sentient beings. The Tathagata, with skillful means, abides in Brahma, and does not turn the wheel of Dharma without being requested. Then, Brahma Sikhin, surrounded by eight hundred thousand kotis of Brahmas, having prostrated before him, together vanished from the world of Brahma and sat before the Tathagata. He touched the two feet of the Tathagata and requested the Blessed One to teach the Dharma for the sake of turning the wheel of Dharma. The Sugata requested to teach the Dharma, thus he requested the Tathagata. At that time, Brahma Sikhin also requested the Tathagata with verses: Your Dharma is peaceful and very peaceful, pure and completely pure, stainless and radiant, inexpressible, soundless, without letters, noble, realized by the wisdom of the Buddhas. For the sake of awakening sentient beings who have long slept, are obscured by ignorance, and hold wrong views, therefore, you have practiced extremely difficult asceticism for countless eons. Those who have met with the cause of the Buddhas of the past will realize this supreme Dharma. Because there are many sentient beings with good thoughts here, may the Tathagata turn the wheel of Dharma. You have completely destroyed the army of Mara, you have fully opened the gate of nectar. Great leader, lead sentient beings who have strayed onto the wrong path to the noble path. Your Buddha's compassion is unsurpassed, thinking of benefiting beings.

also does not pervasively enter. To you, the teacher, I make a request, please turn the supreme Dharma wheel. Just as the Victorious One turns the wheel of existence, just as the golden steadfast Victorious One turns, just as the Sugata Light Protector also turns, so too, the Bhagavan turns the Dharma wheel. Just as the water of the clouds satisfies, so it produces crops and medicines, the clouds of compassion pervade the world, so may you, the Thus-gone One, send down the rain of Dharma. As soon as the supreme guide is born, he utters a sound to liberate beings, now, today, gods and humans are thirsty, please quench their thirst with the water of the great Dharma. Son of good family, thus, knowing that the Thus-gone One has been requested by Brahma with the topknot, because you have not abandoned great compassion, in the Deer Park at the place where ascetics fell in Varanasi, for the sake of ascetics or Brahmins, or gods or demons, or Brahma, or anyone who has not turned the Dharma wheel that accords with the Dharma in the world, he turned the unsurpassed Dharma wheel, and with the sound of impermanence, he made the realm of the three thousand great thousand worlds aware. Kaundinya also first understood all the Dharmas. Then, at that time, this verse was specifically spoken: It is unspeakable and profound, without letters and of definite meaning, since Kaundinya has understood this, my effort is not in vain. By the Thus-gone One turning the Dharma wheel, countless immeasurable beings were tamed. Knowing that the Thus-gone One is fully engaged in great compassion, countless immeasurable beings generated the mind of enlightenment. Son of good family, the sixteen aspects of great compassion of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are spontaneously accomplished and always present, and should not be abandoned. Possessing that great compassion, the Thus-gone One is also willing to abide in the great hells of beings for as many kalpas as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River for the sake of each being, and if those beings can be tamed in the discipline of the noble ones, then the Thus-gone One will not be weary, and that great compassion will not

is equal. Thus, sentient beings receive the inconceivable great compassion of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat. The compassion of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas is like the form of skin. The compassion of the Bodhisattvas is like the form of flesh. The great compassion of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is like the form of bones and marrow. The compassion of the Shravakas is to rejoice in the wisdom of the Buddha. The compassion of the Bodhisattvas is to cause the mind of Bodhi to be properly held. The great compassion of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is to prophesy Buddhahood. The compassion of the Shravakas depends on loving-kindness. The compassion of the Bodhisattvas depends on the maturation of sentient beings. The great compassion of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, depends on causing extreme maturation. The great compassion of the Shravakas is completely weary of fabrication. The compassion of the Bodhisattvas causes fabrication to fall into decline. The great compassion of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, causes all fabrication to fall into decline. Son of good family, thus, the great compassion of the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, is supreme, because the Buddha, for the sake of taming (beings), even if he remains for a kalpa, or a hundred kalpas, or a thousand kalpas, or a hundred thousand kalpas, he would rather not enter complete Nirvana than to completely enter Nirvana. Son of good family, you should understand this in this way. Son of good family, it happened in the past, in a time past, more countless than countless kalpas ago, at that time, in that period, in the kalpa called "Fragrance Supreme," in a world called "Possessing Fragrance," the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, named Candana-griha (旃檀屋), possessed of knowledge and conduct, Sugata, Knower of the World, unsurpassed tamer of beings, teacher of gods and humans, Buddha, Bhagavat, appeared in the world. The lifespan of the Bhagavat Candana-griha Tathagata was eighty-four thousand years.

He was able to live for sixteen hundred thousand years. His assembly of Shravakas consisted of one million six hundred and eighty-four thousand Shravakas. The Blessed One Chandanakhya Tathagata, the fragrance emanating from one of his pores, filled the three thousand great thousand worlds with sweet fragrance. In that world, no foul odor arose. Moreover, the walls, trees, mountains, and visible forms in that world were all permeated by the Tathagata's fragrance, hence that world was called the Fragrant World. All beings born in that world, through the Tathagata's fragrance, had faultless conduct of body, speech, and mind. Those beings who went forth in the Blessed One's teachings also generated the four dhyanas by carrying that fragrance. In that world, eleven thousand Buddhas appeared simultaneously, all sharing the same name, Chandanakhya. Therefore, that kalpa was called the Excellent Fragrance Kalpa. When the Blessed One Chandanakhya Tathagata had completed the deeds of a Buddha and was about to pass into complete nirvana, he observed the realm of beings, thinking, 'Which being should I tame?' With his pure and superhuman divine eye, he saw among the gods in the Realm of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception, a being who had previously planted vast roots of virtue, had faith in the Buddha's teachings, and was to be tamed by the Buddha. He would remain there for eighty-four thousand kalpas, and after death, be reborn among humans, sharing their fate. If he did not indulge in desires and heard the praise of the Mahayana, he would generate the mind of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, and would become irreversible from unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Then, the Blessed One Chandanakhya Tathagata, with skillful means, manifested great compassion and addressed the monks: 'Monks, the time for me to pass into complete nirvana has come, and today I shall pass into complete nirvana.'
