Just as that which is formless and cannot be expressed, so too is enlightenment formless and cannot be expressed. If one seeks thoroughly and correctly, then all dharmas are inexpressible; there are no words in dharma, and no dharma in words. Because sentient beings have not understood this aspect of dharma, the great compassion of the Tathagata arises for sentient beings, thinking, 'I shall make them understand.' Son of good family, enlightenment is ungraspable and without basis. What is ungraspable? What is without basis? The eye's complete knowing is ungraspable. Form's being without object is without basis. The ear's complete knowing is ungraspable. Sound's being without object is without basis. The nose's complete knowing is ungraspable. Smell's being without object is without basis. The tongue's complete knowing is ungraspable. Taste's being without object is without basis. The body's complete knowing is ungraspable. Touch's being without object is without basis. The mind's complete knowing is ungraspable. Dharmas' being without object is without basis. Thus, the Tathagata awakened to enlightenment as ungraspable and without basis. Having awakened to complete enlightenment, the eye is ungraspable, form is not a basis, and consciousness has no abiding. The ear is ungraspable, sound is not a basis, and consciousness has no abiding. The nose is ungraspable, smell is not a basis, and consciousness has no abiding. The tongue is ungraspable, taste is not a basis, and consciousness has no abiding. The body is ungraspable, touch is not a basis, and consciousness has no abiding. The mind is ungraspable, dharmas are not a basis, and consciousness has no abiding. Because consciousness has no abiding, he thoroughly knows all the abodes of the minds of all sentient beings. What are the abodes of the minds of sentient beings? The abodes of the minds of sentient beings are these four. What are the four? They are: form is the abode of the minds of sentient beings, and feeling, perception, and formation are the abodes of the minds of sentient beings. The Tathagata knows that those abodes of the mind are without abode.

O! Because sentient beings have not comprehended this edge of having nowhere to go, the great compassion of the Tathagata arises for those sentient beings, thinking to make them comprehend. Son of good family, what is called enlightenment is just a term for emptiness. By what emptiness is enlightenment? By the emptiness of emptiness, all phenomena are empty. Just as emptiness is, the Tathagata has manifestly and perfectly awakened all those phenomena, but it is not by emptiness that emptiness is manifestly and perfectly awakened. It is like this: knowing that emptiness and enlightenment are the same thing. In that, by what two things are emptiness and enlightenment distinguished? There is not even the slightest distinction between the two. Why is that? Because all phenomena are non-dual, indivisible, without characteristics, without name, without sign, without going, without thoroughly going, without completely arising. What is called emptiness is just a term without manifest attachment and without grasping. In this, although in reality there is no phenomenon that can be designated as emptiness, it is still called emptiness. Just as the sky is called sky, but the sky is not something to be spoken of, so too, emptiness is called emptiness, but emptiness is not something to be spoken of. It is like this: giving a name to the nameless applies to all phenomena. That name does not abide in a place, nor does it abide in a direction. Just as a name does not abide in a place, nor does it abide in a direction, so too, the phenomenon that is spoken of by the name does not abide in a place, nor does it abide in a direction. Thus, the Tathagata knows all those phenomena to be unborn from the beginning, unceasing, without characteristics, separate from mind, intellect, and consciousness, without letters, and without sound. Just as he knows, so too he is liberated, there is neither bondage nor liberation. This equality is also not comprehended by ordinary people, therefore the great compassion of the Tathagata arises, thinking to make them comprehend. Son of good family, enlightenment.

is equal to space, but space is neither equal nor unequal. Enlightenment is neither equal nor unequal. Whatever dharma is not truly accomplished, it cannot be said to be equal or unequal. Thus, the Tathagata manifestly realizes that all dharmas are neither equal nor unequal, and thus manifestly attains Buddhahood. Thus, even the smallest dharma is neither made equal nor unequal, and thus manifestly attains Buddhahood. These dharmas are known by true wisdom as they are. What is true wisdom? It is like this: all dharmas are without root, unborn, and unceasing. They arise from the unarisen, and even after arising, they separate. They arise without a master, and they separate without a master. Thus, although they enter based on arising and ceasing, there is no entry here, because the path is cut off. Therefore, the Tathagata teaches the Dharma. However, since sentient beings do not understand this cut-off path, the Tathagata's great compassion arises, wishing to make them understand. Son of good family, what is called enlightenment is the state of suchness. What is the state of suchness? As enlightenment is, so is form; it does not deviate from suchness. As enlightenment is, so are feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness; they do not deviate from suchness. As enlightenment is, so are the earth element, water element, fire element, and wind element; they do not deviate from suchness. As enlightenment is, so are the eye element, the form element, and the eye consciousness element; they do not deviate from suchness. As enlightenment is, so are the ear element, the sound element, and the ear consciousness element; the nose element, the smell element, and the nose consciousness element; the tongue element, the taste element, and the tongue consciousness element; the body element, the touch element, and the body consciousness element; the mind element, the dharma element, and the mind consciousness element; they do not deviate from suchness.
