Oh! What is the reason for that? It is because the great compassion of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, always enters. It is truly generated by completely purifying it for countless eons. There is no entering, and there is no turning back. The great compassion of the Buddhas, the Blessed Ones, is not abandoned, it abides in all sentient beings. The great compassion of the Tathagata is as immeasurable as it is not easy to completely obtain the karma, as inconceivable as it is, as inexhaustible as it is, and as far-reaching as it is. What is the reason for that? Son of good family, just as the Tathagata attains enlightenment, so does great compassion enter sentient beings. Whatever enlightenment is like, so is great compassion. How does the Tathagata attain enlightenment? The Tathagata attains enlightenment without root and without place. What is the root? What is the place? The aggregates are the root. Incorrect conceptualization is the place. The Tathagata fully understands that these two are equal by the equality of enlightenment. Therefore, the Tathagata is said to have attained perfect and complete enlightenment without root and without place. Since these sentient beings have not understood these rootless and placeless dharmas, the Tathagata enters into great compassion for sentient beings, thinking that they should understand them. Son of good family, enlightenment is peace and near peace. What is peace? What is near peace? The inner is peace. The outer is near peace. What is the reason for that? The eye is empty of self and what belongs to self, that is its nature. The ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind are empty of self and what belongs to self, that is its nature. Having fully understood that the eye is empty, one does not pursue forms, therefore it is called near peace. Having fully understood that the ear is empty, one does not pursue sounds, therefore it is called near peace. Having fully understood that the nose is empty, one does not pursue smells, therefore it is called near peace. Having fully understood that the tongue is empty, one does not pursue tastes, therefore it is called near peace.

Having fully known that the body is empty, one does not pursue objects of touch; therefore, it is called pacification. Having fully known that the mind is empty, one does not pursue phenomena; therefore, it is called pacification. Since these sentient beings have not comprehended peace and near peace, thinking that they should be made to comprehend them, the great compassion of the Tathagata enters into these sentient beings. Son of good family, since the nature of mind is naturally luminous, therefore, the nature of enlightenment is naturally luminous. Why is it called naturally luminous? Because that which is nature is without all defilements, equal to space, the nature of space, proceeding equally with space, equal because of being equal with space; that nature is indeed exceedingly luminous. Since childish ordinary beings have not comprehended this naturally luminous nature, they are completely defiled by adventitious defilements; thinking that they should be made to comprehend that naturally luminous nature, the great compassion of the Tathagata enters into these sentient beings. Son of good family, enlightenment is without acceptance and without rejection. What is without acceptance? What is without rejection? That which is called without acceptance is not grasping all phenomena. That which is called without rejection is not abandoning all phenomena. When the Tathagata enters the river of without acceptance and without rejection, he crosses over just as he correctly sees that reality has no further shore and is not without a further shore. Thus, the Tathagata manifestly and completely awakens to all phenomena as without a further shore and separated from a further shore; therefore, he is called the Tathagata. Since childish ordinary beings have not comprehended this without acceptance and without rejection, thinking that they should be made to comprehend it, the great compassion of the Tathagata enters into these sentient beings. Son of good family, enlightenment is without characteristics and without focus. What is without characteristics? What is without focus? Eye consciousness without an object is without characteristics. Not truly seeing form is without focus. Ear consciousness without an object is
