Chapter 3: Skillful Means. O Manjushri, you should understand that I do not establish the vehicles of Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas with these names. Why? Because the Tathagata has no differentiated perceptions. O Manjushri, if the Tathagata teaches the Great Vehicle to some beings, the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle to some, and the Shravaka Vehicle to some, then the Tathagata's mind would become impure, the mind would become unequal, there would be the fault of obvious attachment, great compassion would become one-sided, there would be the fault of differentiated perceptions, and I would be considered a teacher who conceals the example of the Dharma. O Manjushri, whatever Dharma I teach to beings, all of that is like this: to attain the wisdom of all-knowing, to be devoted to Bodhi, to enter the Great Vehicle, to accomplish all-knowingness, to perfectly go to one place. Therefore, I do not establish different vehicles. Manjushri asked the Blessed One: O Blessed One, if there is no establishment of vehicles, then why does the Tathagata teach the Dharma to beings based on the three vehicles: the Shravaka Vehicle, the Pratyekabuddha Vehicle, and the Great Vehicle? The Blessed One replied: O Manjushri, the so-called establishment of vehicles is that the Tathagata establishes the ground, but not the vehicle. That is, the Tathagata establishes the characteristics of the Dharma, that is, the Tathagata establishes the individual, that is, the Tathagata establishes the small and immeasurable assemblies. Because the essence of Dharma has no difference, there is no different vehicle here. O Manjushri, that is the gate of entry shown by the Tathagata, and it should be regarded like a craftsman entering learning gradually. O Manjushri, for example, a master of archery who has attained the highest achievement in the study of archery, his student...

By various methods and various efforts, they show measurement; to understand measurement, that is all. Manjushri, similarly, the Tathagata is the teacher of the measure of Dharma, and the wise also show that single omniscient wisdom in three ways. Manjushri, for example, a small flame, when it spreads, has the power to burn until the end of the kalpa. Manjushri, similarly, the single light of wisdom also gradually increases, and in order to burn all defilements, it bestows up to the great light of the Tathagata's wisdom. Manjushri, for example, Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains, is non-discriminating, and whatever beings go near it, all of them, like this, become the same color as gold. Manjushri, similarly, the great, unsurpassed Mount Sumeru of the Tathagata's wisdom is also non-discriminating, and whatever beings there see the Dharma-nature of the Tathagata, all of them, like this, become the same color as omniscient wisdom. Manjushri, for example, the great jewel Indranila, wherever it is located, even within the area of that great jewel, all those different colors and various shapes of colors that appear, because of the splendor of that jewel, like this, become the same color as blue. Manjushri, similarly, whatever beings are touched by the Dharma-light and light of the unsurpassed great jewel Indranila of the Tathagata, all of them, like this, become the same color as omniscient wisdom. Manjushri, for example, many waters flow into the great ocean from different gates, and after flowing in, all of them, like this, constantly remain as the same taste of salt. Manjushri, that which is called the great ocean is the sublime word of the Tathagata. The flowing of many waters from different gates is called the sublime word of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas. After flowing in
