How can offerings made with faith be fully enjoyed? The Blessed One said: Manjushri, those who abandon this Dharma discourse and generate unkind thoughts towards those who preach the Dharma, even if they use offerings made with faith for a period as short as a day or a snap of the fingers, I will not allow them to enjoy it. I would not even allow them to spit or throw ashes on land offered to the Sangha. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, are the five inexpiable sins near or far from here? The Blessed One said: Venerable Sharadvatiputra, be quiet, do not ask such questions. Why is that? Sharadvatiputra, the five inexpiable sins are never like abandoning this supreme Dharma discourse. Sharadvatiputra, those who commit the five inexpiable sins will quickly exhaust those sins and be reborn as humans. Those who abandon the true Dharma will never attain the Buddhadharma, for they will destroy themselves and others. Then, the venerable Sharadvatiputra knelt before the Blessed One and said: Alas! How painful are those beings who abandon the true Dharma! May I never see such karmic obscurations, even in my dreams! Third Chapter Then, the Blessed One said to the venerable Sharadvatiputra: Sharadvatiputra, do not think that way. The Dharma I have taught is inherent, and the world is the master of karma, experiencing the fruits of their own karma, their own karma is firm. Beings experience suffering according to their own karma, and the Tathagata cannot change that. Sharadvatiputra, I have taught the path to goodness, the path to happiness, the path to fearlessness, the path to Nirvana, and the path to immortality. However, these beings are endowed with misconduct of body, misconduct of speech, and misconduct of mind, and they slander the noble ones, have wrong views, and are wrong.

Through the karma of viewing with wrong views and the cause of abandoning the true Dharma, sentient beings with wrong views fall into evil destinies and evil paths after the body breaks down and dies, and are born in hells. The Thus-Gone One does not ignore this. Sharadvatiputra, such compassion arises in me for all sentient beings. Even if I were to experience the suffering of hellish sentient beings for a kalpa or more than a kalpa for the sake of one sentient being, I would not abandon this one sentient being. Sharadvatiputra, the great compassion of the Thus-Gone One is like this. Sharadvatiputra, for example, a person has an only son who is well-formed, beautiful, pleasing to look at, with a good complexion, prosperous, and endowed with excellence. If this son encounters some cause and faces death, that person suffers and is unhappy because of thinking of the son, weeping and lamenting. Sharadvatiputra, just as the Thus-Gone One, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, also regards suffering sentient beings as if they were an only son. The Thus-Gone Ones do not dwell with afflictions. Sharadvatiputra, for example, the great ocean does not dwell with corpses. Sharadvatiputra, just as the Thus-Gone Ones also do not dwell with afflictions. Sharadvatiputra, for example, a magician or a skilled disciple of a magician conjures up a large crowd of people at the crossroads of a great road, showing various actions, but those actions do not exist in any place, they are neither born nor cease, nor will they cease. Sharadvatiputra, just as the Thus-Gone Ones also ripen sentient beings and show the conduct of desire, although they show various actions, those actions are not existent. For example, the realm of space is without conceptualization and without elaboration. Similarly, the body of the Thus-Gone One is also without conceptualization and without elaboration. However, in order to be in harmony with sentient beings, the Thus-Gone Ones also act in harmony with them. Just as sentient beings are to be tamed, the Thus-Gone Ones also act accordingly.

Son of Sharadvati, the Tathagata has no confusion. The Tathagata has no unknowing. The Tathagata has no forgetting. Son of Sharadvati, I am the eldest son, the lord, the victor, the supreme, the excellent, the teacher, the unsurpassed, the incomparable, the unequal and the equal of the world with the gods. Son of Sharadvati, these words spoken are in accordance with the truth. Whether ordained or householder, any sentient beings who abandon this category of Dharma, they will all obtain such suffering of sentient beings in hell. Then, the venerable Subhuti, having heard this teaching of the Blessed One, joined his palms and said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, those sentient beings have indeed obtained a wrong attainment. What kind of tongue will those who are going to abandon this category of Dharma have? The Blessed One said: Subhuti, their tongues will become one hundred thousand yojanas, and on them burning iron plows, blazing, extremely blazing, completely blazing. Completely spreading and burning, a single flame will be plowed by five hundred kotis. Why is that? Because they did not guard their speech. Subhuti, the karmic obscurations of those who are not foolish will be like that. Then, by the power of the Buddha, the entire assembly, endowed with all, exclaimed in unison: The teaching of the Tathagata is truly wonderful! Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, I will honor those Dharma-speaking monks on my shoulders. I will make offerings with flowers, incense, perfumes, garlands, and unguents. I will hold umbrellas three times and pay homage three times. I will attend with reverence. I will respect. I will regard them as teachers. I will remember them. I will make offerings. I will remember. I will entertain. I will respect, regard them as teachers, and guard them with reverence. Why is that? Because they are the sons of the Blessed One, and they are certainly born from the Dharmakaya.
