From the conditions of earth, hatred does not arise. The present conditions are also unceasing and uninterrupted. Manjushri, any dharma that does not arise from the past, nor from the future, nor from the present action, that is called the basis of the dharani that is completely pure in the three times. Manjushri, ignorance is the basis of dharani. Question: World Honored One, how is ignorance the basis of dharani? The World Honored One said: Manjushri, ignorance arises from non-knowing, and that non-knowing is not mixed with the earth element, nor is it the water element, nor the fire element, nor the wind element, nor the space element, nor is it mixed with the consciousness element. Manjushri, the unmixed dharma will not become completely defiled, nor will it become completely purified. Manjushri, if that unmixed dharma were to become completely defiled or completely purified, then the sky would also become completely defiled and become completely purified. Why is that? Manjushri, the sky is not mixed with any dharma. Manjushri, whatever is not mixed with ignorance, does not change, is not tamed, is not existent, is not produced, is without substance, is invisible, does not appear, cannot be grasped, is not bound, is not liberated, is immeasurable, is not disturbed, is hollow, is empty, can it be said to be completely defiled or completely purified? Question: World Honored One, it is not. The World Honored One said: Manjushri, the non-knowing, non-knowing, as taught by the Thus Come One, that has no beginning. There is also no constant oneness. There is no beginning edge, and there is no final edge, and there is no present arising, therefore it is called non-knowing. Manjushri, any dharma that is non-existent and cannot be found, cannot be distinguished, does not appear, does not perish, does not completely perish, is not hateful, is not ignorant, for any dharma, does it perform the action of completely defiling or completely purifying or obscuring? Question: World Honored One, it is not. Sugata, it is not. World Honored One, if that dharma of non-knowing does not perform the action of completely defiling or completely purifying or obscuring for any dharma, then how does the World Honored One teach that non-knowing is completely defiled?

Then Nada (transliteration) said: Manjushri, for example, relying on the drill and the drill board, and also relying on the hand of a person drilling, smoke arises and fire is manifestly produced. That fire does not reside on the drill, nor does it reside on the drill board, nor does it reside on the hand of a person drilling. Manjushri, similarly, a foolish being, completely tormented by desire, hatred, and ignorance, produces fire. That complete torment does not reside within, nor does it reside without, nor does it reside in both existence and non-existence, yet, Manjushri, it is called ignorance. What is the reason for that? Manjushri, it is because all dharmas are extremely liberated. Whichever dharma is extremely liberated, that is the basis of the dharani. Then, the youthful Manjushri asked the Bhagavan in this way: Bhagavan, with what kind of dharma gate does a Bodhisattva possess, in order to obtain the dharani that follows all? Are there any dharma gates? The Bhagavan said: Manjushri, with what kind of dharma gate does a Bodhisattva possess, in order to obtain the dharma gate of the dharani that follows all, there is. Even if one speaks of a million letters from one letter, one cannot exhaust the boundary of that letter. From which and which dharma gate the dharma gate is spoken, from that and that dharma gate, infinite dharma gates appear, and eloquence is also unimpeded. Because that eloquence is also unimpeded, all dharma gates are proclaimed. One phrase of a dharma gate causes all phrases of dharma gates to enter accordingly. All phrases of dharma gates cause one phrase of a dharma gate to enter accordingly. Manjushri asked: Bhagavan, what is that dharma gate like? The Bhagavan said: Manjushri, all dharmas are the gate of the gods, this is the basis of the dharani. Asked: Bhagavan, how is that the basis of the dharani? The Bhagavan said: Manjushri, all dharmas abide in the place of taming, that is the basis of the dharani that enters like a god. Manjushri, all dharmas are the gate of the nagas, this is the basis of the dharani. Asked: Bhagavan, how is that the basis of the dharani? The Bhagavan said: Manjushri, all dharmas
