In order to make offerings to the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, he held wish-fulfilling jewels in both hands. Then, the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, endowed with the voice of Brahma, gazed without blinking at the Tathagata Shakyamuni, regarding him as something other than other, inexpressible, and nothing at all. Then, the Tathagata Shakyamuni said to Brahma, endowed with the voice of Brahma: "Hey, what are you looking at me for without blinking, until there is nothing at all? Is there anything here called Buddha, or any dharma called nothing at all? Likewise, the afflictions of desire, hatred, and ignorance, the reality of these names is the characteristic of conditions. The condition of characteristics is ignorance. From the condition of ignorance to cessation, it should be explained extensively." He reported: "Bhagavat, since it is not like this, therefore it is said to be ignorance. Bhagavat, if ignorance does not exist, from where will these twelve branches of existence arise? If it is said to arise from space, then space itself does not exist." The Bhagavat said: "Son of good family, it is just so. All the dharmas of the Buddha are like space. Just as space is not substance, not characteristic, not darkness, not light, not thought, not discrimination, not consciousness, not accomplishment, not expression, nothing at all, without parts, abandoning all things, so too, son of good family, the dharmas of the Buddha are just so, because of suchness. The dharmas of the Buddha are completely delimited by the ultimate reality. Because there is no decrease and no increase, the dharmas of the Buddha do not touch this shore or the other shore. Because there are no parts, the dharmas of the Buddha are inexpressible. Because they are unmoving and without any distinction, the dharmas of the Buddha are without all substance, things, and characteristics. Because they are separated from the path of words, all the dharmas of the Buddha are without fabrication, not true, and the branches of existence arise from universal thought. When this teaching was taught,

Eighty-four thousand beings generated the mind for unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. Then the evil demon pleaded: If the Buddha's Dharma is like the sky, without substance and beyond expression, then why do you harm me in this way with wisdom, diligence, skillful means, and subduing others? You destroy my realm of demons, lead beings away from my realm of demons, and initiate them into learning illusion that is without going, without coming, and without anything at all. When these beings learn from your teachings, I do not truly see them engaging in actions that give rise to afflictions. For what reason have you, for my sake, gathered countless immeasurable Buddhas, Bhagavat, Bodhisattva Mahasattvas, great Shravakas, great Brahmas, Indra, the Four Great Kings, great Ishvaras, gods with great miraculous powers and great strength, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas, filling all these Buddha-fields without exception? This merciless one also speaks such secret mantra words that those who hear them immediately are struck with unbearable headaches, experience feelings of suffering, and their bodies rot and become foul-smelling. Then, sixty-eight thousand demons, countless immeasurable retinues of demons, and likewise hateful yakshas, rakshasas, kumbhandas, and flesh-eaters all spoke with one voice, saying: We too, as soon as we hear, immediately feel headaches, and our bodies rot and become foul-smelling, experiencing extremely painful feelings. The Tathagata Shakyamuni spoke thus: Evil one, you should remember the past. When I was sitting at the heart of enlightenment, you came with an army of demons filling the land and sky within eighty yojanas to kill me, and even now you have sent a billion demons and their retinues to kill me. Therefore, you are completely
