Having attained samadhi. Possessing unobstructed wisdom regarding all dharmas. Maintaining equanimity towards all sentient beings. Having completely transcended all realms of Mara. Entering the realm of all Tathagatas. Skilled in knowledge. Endowed with great love and great compassion, skilled in skillful means and wisdom. This is the sole means. At that time, in the great city of Rajagriha, there was a wandering ascetic named Bright, who was wise, with a disciplined mind, having mastered the eighteen branches of knowledge, and possessing five hundred attendants. One was named Nyegyal (Near Victory), and the other was named Pangne Kye (Born from the Knee). These two leaders and their retinues made a vow to each other, saying: "Whichever of us first attains amrita (nectar), shall inform the other." Then, the venerable Ashvajit, in the early morning, having put on his lower garment and robes, and carrying his bowl, entered the great city of Rajagriha for alms. The wandering ascetic Nyegyal saw the venerable Ashvajit entering the city of Rajagriha for alms. Having seen him, he thought: "How beautiful is the conduct of this renunciate! I have never before seen such a renunciate, Brahmin, or other person. I should go to him and ask: 'Venerable one, who is your teacher? From whom did you renounce? Whose teachings do you delight in?'" Then, the wandering ascetic Nyegyal went to where the venerable Ashvajit was, and having arrived, exchanged various pleasant and joyful conversations with the venerable Ashvajit, and then sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, the wandering ascetic Nyegyal said to the venerable Ashvajit: "Venerable one, who is your teacher? From whom did you renounce? Whose teachings do you delight in?" Then, the venerable Ashvajit said to the wandering ascetic Nyegyal: "The son of the Shakyas, the great ascetic practitioner, the most supreme of all, endowed with power. He who has crossed the ocean of samsara and attained liberation, and likewise liberates beings. He is called Buddha, the Awakened One, the incomparable."

The ocean of suffering has now dried up here. I go for refuge to the stainless one, I delight in his Dharma. Nigrodha said: How does your teacher speak? How does he teach? The venerable Aśvajit said: Therefore, venerable one, listen well and keep it in mind, and I will tell you. How does the world arise with the cause of karma and afflictions, possessing the cause of arising? And the cause of the cessation of karma and afflictions, the guide has also spoken well. Where does the suffering of birth, old age, and decay certainly not remain? The supreme liberation, the best of speakers, has spoken, knowing it himself. Then, the wanderer Nigrodha, having heard this discourse on the Dharma, the Dharma-eye, without dust, without stain, and without afflictions, arose in him regarding the dharmas. Having obtained the fruit of stream-entry, at that time he spoke this verse: The Buddha has spoken of the Dharma, the treasure of hearing, the nectar, which is very difficult to obtain. This is truly understood to be the drying up of the ever-flowing stream. That will completely pacify the suffering of beings, this noble path is wisdom, and meditating on the dharmas is acting unequally. Then, the wanderer Nigrodha said to the venerable Aśvajit: Venerable one, where does the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly enlightened Buddha, now reside? The venerable Aśvajit said: Venerable one, the Blessed One is dwelling in the Bamboo Grove of Kalandaka in the Radiant Garden of Rajagriha, together with a great community of monks, a thousand ascetics with matted hair who have gone forth. Nigrodha said: I will look after my excellent friends and the circle of disciples, and then I will go forth in the presence of the Blessed One. Then, the wanderer Nigrodha bowed his head at the feet of the venerable Aśvajit, circumambulated him three times, and returned to the place where the wanderer was born in the Bamboo Grove. The wanderer born in the Bamboo Grove saw the wanderer Nigrodha coming from afar, and having seen him, said to the wanderer Nigrodha: Venerable one, your senses are clear, and the radiance of your face is complete.
