Those who are tamed by the category of the Four Great Kings, and those who are tamed by a Wheel-Turning King, and those who are tamed by petty kings of border regions, and those who are tamed by great miraculous powers, and those who are tamed by ascetics, and those who are tamed by youths, and those who are tamed by women, and those who are tamed by lions, and those who are tamed by elephants, and those who are tamed by nāgas, and those who are tamed by asuras, up to those who have faith in rabbits and are tamed by rabbits, those saw the Blessed One passing by on the road with the form, signs, and conduct of a rabbit. Those sentient beings who are to be tamed by a Buddha, they saw the Blessed One passing by on the road with the form, signs, and conduct of a Buddha, and all those sentient beings joined their palms, manifestly praised and prostrated, followed at his feet and went forth. Again, at that time, a hermit named Fond of Stars, dwelling near the Snow Mountain, was sent by the evil Māra. He, with five hundred attendants, was dwelling near the gate of the great city of Rājagṛha. The Blessed One, with the form, signs, color, shape, conduct, and arrangement of a hermit, passed by on the road, and saw many hundreds of thousands of millions of gods striving to make offerings. Having seen this, he thought to himself: "Truly, this is a great hermit, powerful and worthy of offerings. Gods and humans appear to be making offerings to him. His entire body is adorned with the marks of merit. It is known that he is wise and a teacher. Which of us two is older? Which is wiser? How should I examine him?" Then he thought again, "I should go to greet him and ask him about his lineage, clan, dwelling, and all his ascetic practices." Then the hermit Fond of Stars looked at his retinue and spoke these words: "Possessing hearing, pleasing to the mind, holding great asceticism, appearing to be of a lineage worthy of offerings, Endowed with wisdom, Dharma, and meaning, the supreme Sage, patient, this one knows the path well. All of you should respectfully offer great offerings to him, From this virtuous one, at the end of the retinue, listen to the good words that lead to the complete path." Then the sage who delighted in the stars, together with his attendants, went to where the Blessed One was, and having arrived, he sat down with his palms joined before the Blessed One and said this: Who are you? The Blessed One replied: I am a Brahmin. He asked: What is your lineage? He replied: My lineage is Gautama. He asked: What is your ascetic practice? He replied: My ascetic practice is the three liberations. He asked: What is your conduct? He replied: I conduct myself in the suchness of the ultimate reality. He asked: How long have you been ordained? He replied: As long as ignorance has arisen, so long have I been ordained. He asked: Great sage, do you speak the science of astrological prediction? The Blessed One replied: Without fabrication, in equanimity. This is worldly knowledge. What essence does it have? The sage asked: To make the wise rejoice. The Blessed One replied: Where is the position of the stars? The sage asked: Those twenty-eight constellations that depend on the moon and the sun and follow their course, these are they. There, one finger is the measure of eight fingers. By the measure of that finger, one should know that the body has twelve fingers in length. The crown of the head has one finger, and the sole of the foot has one finger. These fourteen fingers are the positions of the stars. Whatever exists in those positions does not change. Whichever star one is born under, one exists in that position. What else? I will tell it, great sage, listen. Whoever is born under Krittika, on the four fingers of his face, on the right side, there is a mole, hairy, black and also red. Possessing wealth and fame, wise and very radiant, these are the characteristics of one born under Krittika. Whoever has a mole on the four fingers, that one is born under Rohini, wise and always delighting in the Dharma, intelligent and possessing abundant wealth, beautiful in every way, brave and victorious, always destroying enemies.
