Understanding and realizing the perception of arising, abiding, and ceasing, all phenomena are pacified by emptiness, becoming impermanent and changing, empty and without self, like an illusion, like a manifestation, like lightning, wind, and a city of gandharvas, like a water bubble, mirage, echo, and the trace of a bird in the sky. In the world, all water, such as mountains, forests, rivers, waterfalls, lakes, ponds, and oceans, will be burned and exhausted when the great fire kalpa occurs, except for the four dhyanas and the four formless samadhis. If one knows that all phenomena are empty, then the power of dhyana is extremely inconceivable, and it should be known. When the mind abides in samadhi, the sun, moon, stars, waterfalls, rivers, oceans, mountains, forests, jungles, and valleys of the ten directions of the three thousand great thousand worlds will appear as if an amalaka fruit is placed in the palm of one's hand. Abiding in the samadhi of dhyana, one can use supernatural powers to go to places as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River in the ten directions of the world, and also transform the wind, fire, earth, water, sun, moon, stars, constellations, mountains, forests, rivers, trees, celestial palaces, and dragon palaces of the ten directions of the world with supernatural powers. Therefore, the power of dhyana is extremely inconceivable, and it should be known. With the power of dhyana samadhi, one can also transform the ten directions of the world of the three thousand great thousand worlds. Ananda, the great son of Maudgalyayana, entered samadhi and manifested various forms with samadhi, and with samadhi he could also move this great earth like a rotating torch. It should be known that this cannot be done through much hearing. The Blessed One said to Ananda: Shake the great earth. Ananda replied: I do not have the samadhi of dhyana, so I cannot shake it. The Blessed One said to Ananda: The samadhi of dhyana

Even if a meditating ascetic does not attain the four fruits, he is a hundred thousand times superior to one who has heard much. At that time, in that era, about five hundred monks residing in the Bright Garden all prided themselves on having heard much. When the Blessed One heard this, he said to Ananda, "The son of Maudgalyayana is the most excellent in miraculous powers and samadhi." Having heard this, they arrived where the Buddha was and bowed their heads at the feet of the Blessed One, and then spoke to the Buddha thus: "Blessed One, we have learned much hearing, and have even mastered the twelve divisions of scripture, so that even sixteen great kingdoms respect and revere us as they would the Buddha. Why then does the Blessed One say that one who has heard much will never attain unsurpassed enlightenment?" After they had thus reported, the five hundred monks unanimously reported to the Blessed One, saying, "We now wish to abandon extensive hearing and study the samadhi of meditation." The Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, do not say that you will abandon extensive hearing and engage in the samadhi of meditation. In my view, your wisdom is like a bee trying to obscure the sun and moon with its wings, or like a blind man trying to climb Mount Sumeru, or like wanting to cross the ocean without a boat, or like a bird with broken wings wanting to fly in the sky, you are just like that." After the Blessed One had said this, the monks all felt fear and dread as if they were about to die. Then, the Blessed One said to the monks, "Monks, do not be afraid, do not be frightened, place your minds on samadhi." The monks reported, "We do not even have the power of meditation, how can we enter samadhi?" The Blessed One said, "I have an excellent medicine that will enable you to attain samadhi." The monks requested the Blessed One to teach them, saying, "We wish to practice accordingly." The Blessed One said, "The so-called excellent medicine is as follows: investigation, discernment, entering, and abandoning." The monks reported, "Investigation, discernment, entering,
