Practice extensively with discipline, patience, love, compassion, joy, and equanimity. If one has an equal mind towards all sentient beings, like a single child, which of these two has greater merit? Ananda replied: The merit of practicing love, compassion, joy, equanimity, discipline, and patience, and giving generously to sentient beings is greater and more abundant. The Blessed One said to Ananda: If one person can explain and expound the twelve categories of scriptures, and is proficient in explaining the fifteen Udanas and propagates them in the world, and another person can explain and expound the twelve categories of scriptures, including the guiding treatises, the definitive treatises, the treatises on the five aggregates, the treatises on the twelve links of dependent origination, the treatises on the eighteen elements, the treatises on the great emptiness, the treatises on the sun and moon, the treatises on the clouds of the sun and moon, the treatises on the Ornament of the Sutras, the treatises on the ultimate truth, the treatises on the Vajra Heart, the treatises on omniscience, and the treatises on the three doors of liberation, and so on, and is proficient in the fifteen Udanas, and practices generosity, discipline, patience, love, compassion, joy, and equanimity, and whether one is immoral or moral, and has a non-dual mind that is equal like the sky, and does not see any faults in sentient beings and is equal to all sentient beings like a single child, and is equal to enemies like the sky, and if one person does not slander the extensive twelve categories of scriptures, which of these two has greater merit? Ananda replied: If one does not slander the extensive twelve categories of scriptures, that person's merit is immeasurable and countless, and inconceivable. The Blessed One said to Ananda: Furthermore, all the merits of one person mentioned above can fill the entire three thousand great thousand worlds, and one can recite and explain the twelve categories of scriptures and the fifteen Udanas.

Moreover, one practices morality, patience, love, and so on, and also performs generosity. Although one becomes the foremost in learning and also explains the meaning of all dharmas being empty and peaceful, and attains the five clairvoyances of hearing, even having done things for benefit and happiness in this way, one still cannot enable a person to enter into samadhi for even a single day or night. Why is that? Because a learned person has a great mind of pride, like a mountain or an ocean. Being so proud, one will experience suffering in the lower realms for countless eons. Even if one is liberated from that hell, one will be born as a bird. What benefit is there in much learning? Whoever has the samadhi of meditation is able to purify the heavy karma of sins and misdeeds in the cycle of birth and death. Much learning is like grass; samadhi is like fire. Much learning is like iron; the samadhi of meditation is like gold. Much learning is like a lacquer tree; the samadhi of meditation is like the trunk of a lacquer tree. Much learning is like a river; the samadhi of meditation is like an ocean. If I were to speak of the merit and qualities of the samadhi of meditation, there would be no end to it; it would not be exhausted even in an eon. The Bhagavan said to Ananda: I clearly remember that in a past time, when I became a learned person, Manjushri and I debated about existence and non-existence. Manjushri said it exists, and I said it does not. We debated about the truth of existence and non-existence and did not come to an agreement. Eventually, after death, I was born in a lower realm and ate iron pellets for countless eons. After being liberated from that hell, I met Buddha Light-Protecting, and Light-Protecting explained the truth of existence and non-existence in this way: The nature of all dharmas is definitely one and without cessation. Your saying existence and non-existence is not that meaning. Why is that? Because all dharmas are pacified by emptiness. These two truths are neither existence nor non-existence. What you know is merely knowing the meaning of the words.

Because you do not understand the profound meaning, how can you, like a blind or deaf person, know and comprehend such a profound meaning? After hearing these words, he went to a secluded mountain, focused on himself, and entered the samadhi of meditation. After seven days, he realized and understood the samadhi of meditative quiescence, the three aspects of samadhi, the three kinds of wisdom, the great emptiness, the ultimate emptiness, and the emptiness of emptiness. He realized that all phenomena are quiescent through emptiness, and there is nothing at all. Why? Because the nature of all phenomena is inherently empty. Therefore, it should be known that practicing meditation is supreme. If someone practices the samadhi of meditation for one day, or one night, or seven days, they can gradually pacify and purify the heavy sins of countless kalpas. Furthermore, heavy sins can also be purified. What are those? Killing one's father, killing an arhat, destroying stupas and temples, and burning the dwellings of the sangha with fire. As well as the four parajikas, the eight parajikas, the five heavy sins, and the faults of the six naturally heavy sins. Slandering the extensive sutras, proclaiming the faults of others, being disrespectful, and being arrogant about one's birthplace are also naturally heavy sins. If one practices the samadhi of meditation, these sins will naturally be pacified and purified. This is through the power of the samadhi of meditation that sins are purified, not through other means. If one can obtain such immeasurable merits and virtues in just seven days, what need is there to mention spending one's entire life dwelling in secluded places, in the mountains and under trees, cutting off conceptual thoughts, and recollecting entering and abandoning? Why? Because the mind is like flowing water, never stopping for a moment. The mind is like a monkey, abandoning one thing and grasping another. In short, the mind will not be shaken by the power of samadhi. If the mind is shaken, then a confused perception will arise towards all phenomena. If one abides in samadhi, then...
