That is, as taught by the Buddha, one is liberated from samsara and attains the supreme fruit. The Blessed One declared: 'If one attains in this way, then the time has come to display miracles.' After the Blessed One declared this, five hundred monks rose into the sky and manifested eighteen kinds of miracles in the sky, such as lying down, sitting, walking, standing, and emitting fire and water from their bodies. At that time, the monks who had heard much and were learned, through practicing meditation, became like Mahāmaudgalyāyana, possessing indistinguishable miraculous powers. Then, Ānanda reported to the Blessed One, saying: 'Blessed One, how long will this sacred Dharma remain after the Tathāgata has passed into nirvana? In degenerate times, how many sentient beings, by practicing this Dharma, will be able to attain the four fruits of a śrāmaṇa?' The Blessed One told Ānanda: 'From now on, I will pass into nirvana in the middle of spring in the city of Kuśāgratīrtha For eighty years after my nirvana, many sentient beings will practice the Dharma. They will dwell in cemeteries and under trees, and keeping this in mind, they will practice the Dharma of thinking, discerning, entering, and abandoning. Ninety-nine thousand people will be able to attain the four fruits of a śrāmaṇa. For three hundred years, one hundred thousand sentient beings will attain the four fruits of a śrāmaṇa. After three hundred years, within five hundred years, my attendants will gradually practice non-virtuous Dharma. They will live by wrong livelihood due to jealousy. Ten thousand out of five hundred thousand will attain the fruit of a śrāmaṇa. After five hundred years, within eight hundred years, my attendants will wear the clothes of householders, raise cattle, sheep, cats, donkeys, and horses, and accumulate a lot of grain. They will cultivate their own land and eat their own food, and they will also raise male and female servants. At that time, one thousand out of one million will attain the four fruits of a śrāmaṇa. From eight hundred years to one thousand years, my attendants will study sinful Dharma and associate with kings, princes, ministers, and patrons.'

The fields are eroded by frost, and the land is tilled and dug. Many grains and fodder, as well as gold, silver, and the seven precious substances, are hoarded. People eat meat and drink alcohol, nourishing the four great elements and making them fat. Like prostitutes, they wear revealing clothes to seduce and engage in deceptive activities. Among them, hundreds of thousands, millions, tens of millions, and billions attain the four fruits of the śrāmaṇa. From one thousand to three hundred years, great conflicts will arise. My attendants, although wearing monastic robes, are like covering wood with tattered rags, lacking dignity. Even when seen by laypeople, they are not respected and become like butchers. At that time, the country will also be in turmoil, with people becoming enemies and killing each other. Kings, ministers, parents, sons, and daughters will also become enemies, lacking loving-kindness and compassion, and being troubled by food and drink. There will be no families, no wives, no sons, no daughters, blind people, deaf people, mute people, disabled people, male servants, and female servants who run away, causing the country to decline. Those who cannot survive by begging enter my Dharma, and laypeople also look at them like hunters. They are difficult to tame, like divine bulls, wild horses, or drunken yaks, and they go wherever they please. Teachers and students are also like untamed savages, indulging in desires without restraint, without any order of superiors and subordinates, and without any distinction between good and bad, like livestock. They commit many unwholesome deeds that should not be done, and they are not afraid of the three lower realms. Wherever they go, they associate with wine sellers, butchers, hunters, and prostitutes. They speak evil words and think evil thoughts. Or they rely on ministers and threaten good people with various means, plundering their wealth to support their wives and children. Or they carry hunting tools such as fishing nets, catch fish and other creatures, hold them in their hands, and kill them, or roast them, or fish during the full moon. When they die, they do not perform rituals for their liberation, but let them perish on their own. Those who practice morality quarrel with each other, superiors and subordinates.
